Report=We were going to make the S.D. trip today but the albacore reports suggested that most of the fish were 40-60 miles out, too far for this little 22 ft Bayliner. We decided to fish local instead and headed out to the Flats after picking up a very generous 1/2 scoop of both sardines and anchovies. (Always good to have a pretty girl with you when buying bait) We got there earlier than most of the sport boats so we trolled around to look for some fish ourselves. After 40 mins of no strikes but some impressive meter marks, a few of the cattle boats finally made it out. We decided to take advantage of their chumline, just like all those bastard private boaters do. Keeping our distance, we drifted behind the Western Pride and had wide-open barracuda action. The anchovies were working with #4/0 hooks to keep from getting sawed-off. I'm sure jigs would have worked also but that's too much work when you can nail them on the live stuff. We caught and released many and kept four nice fatty's for eating. After a while, the bite died down, the 'cuda's little stomachs probably full from all the chum in the water. Even the #6 test wasn't getting bit anymore. We made a few moves for not so we then decided to fish the inner rigs for some structure bass fishing. What a blast! The calicos and sandies were hanging around the pilings just below the surface and would nail the split-shotted or fly-lined anchovies on the sink. We caught 3-4 bass on each pass and made 5 or 6 passes! We kept two 13-14 inchers for eating and released the rest. Wind started picking up so we decided to wrap up a great morning of fishing and head in. Many thanks to Wendy Leung who invited me to fish with her on her very clean Bayliner. Wendy is the fishinest woman I know. She could could show a lot of old-timers out there (including myself!) a thing or two about catching. Her website, reelwomenconnect.com should be up within the next couple of days. Check it out, especially if you are a woman who is interested in fishing. She'll hook you up!!
