Report: Just an awesome two days of fishing. When we arrived at the landing I was dissapointed to see that the Outer Limits had only caught 6 albacore for 22 passangers that day. Upon boarding the boat, Capt. Shane gave us the rundown on the fishing situation. "The albacore are way out west and pretty much down" he said. "The fishing at 100+ miles has not been good, but there are some kelps locally (50 miles) that are holding good numbers of fish. We can either run way down and search or stay local and try to find a hot paddy". We took a vote and the local fishing guys barely beat out the guys who wanted to go long range.
So the next morning we woke up at about fifty miles and began the search. The first trolling rotation produced a nice 12-pound yellowfin but four more rotations later, that was still the only fish on the boat. Things were looking pretty grim when Shane gets a call from the Sea Adventure, who is on a hot dodo patty. We slide up to the paddy and hundreds of dorado charged the boat, we must have had at least 15 hookups going at one time. The dodo's would follow us off the paddy for about a mile and then all it took was to run back up to the paddy for more wide-open action. After we had our fill we marked the kelp and set out to look for more tuna. We ended up scratching a few more dorado and a lone yellowtail off another paddy but that was it. We then returned to the "Glory Hole" one more time for an evening bite. We found them even hotter that the last time, the crazy fish were biting the #80 test 10 feet away from the boat. We fished until we ran out of bait, which was no problem, since we were only 50 miles from S.D. Shane put the boat into high gear and we ran back to S.D. harbor to load back up on bait.
On the second day, we found ourselves 80 miles south (213 bank). Here we found a scratchy bite on the yellowfin. We had lots of jig strikes, but only a few were taken on bait. We finished up around 1:00 and started heading in. The total for the two days was about 25 yellowfin, 3 yellowtail and LIMITSSSSSSS of dorado. The crew of the Outer Limits was great and worked very hard. Everyone left the boat with big smiling faces. Thanks to all who joined me on this adventure. I hope to fish with you all again soon.
