Mountaineering background:

I started climbing in 1974 in England. I have climbed throughout North America, the British Isles, Europe and Asia. I have climbed 5.12 rock, A4 aid, grade V ice.

I have led five previous Himalayan expeditions: 1984 Mt. Tilicho expedition, 1987 AnnaPurna I expedition, 1989 Mt. Tilicho expedition, 1992 Pumori expedition, 1994 Mt. Tilicho expedition.

The first three expeditions were winter trips. During these trips we saw temperatures of -40 degrees and severe storms that dumped over 6 feet of snow at a time. The fourth trip was a fall expedition and it was a pleasant experience to have basecamp temperatures well above the freezing mark. It certainly made the leeches bearable. The last trip made all the previous experiences worthwhile. We made the first Canadian and the first American ascents of Mt. Tilicho after what was the third try for me.

In addition to my Himalayan visits I have climbed in the Tetons, the Alps, and the Canadian Rockies on several occassions. In addition to the mountains, I have visit many of the major climbing areas in North America and Britain.
