Canal Lock 12

Going south the path goes along side the canal bed. In some places there is water in the canal. In the dry parts some remains of stone walls and the channel mark the route. The trail is the prettiest is the north where the tree lined route hides it from nearby suburbs.
Here is information about the canal history. The canal went between New Haven and Northampton, MA and operated from 1828 to 1848 when it was no longer profitable and was replaced by a railroad. There were boats for passengers as well as freight. At one time, the railroad and canal operation must have overlapped. There is a sign here describing passenger service to Northampton, using both canal boat and train.
At about two miles we passed Lock 12 and the Lock Keeper's house, which is used as a museum. There are picnic tables and a water fountain here.
