We stayed at Motel 6 in Southington near Rt. 10, a good location halfway between the trails and spent one day on the northern trails and one day on the southern trails. Rt. 10 is busy road but has good shoulders and would be a nice way to bicycle between the trails. Along Rt. 10, Farmington is a very pretty town and worth a visit.
Here is information about the Farmington Valley Greenway and Farmington River Trail. Click on the map tab to see a series of 9 printable maps for sections of the trail. An email address is given to get a free booklet containing these maps. This is much easier to carry on a trip and also has info on restaurants, bike stores, points of interest, and trail history. Since the trail has isn't complete and follows roads in the gaps, it is important to have the maps. In at least one place the map was not up to date. A bridge across the Farmington River has been completed and the south end of the Farmington Valley Greenway now connects to the Farmington River Trail. When we found out about this, it made the ride better than expected, because of less road detours and more trail riding.
