We started bicycling north on the Delaware Canal towpath at Washington Crossing Historic Park. This link describes what there is to see at this historic park and gives historic information about Washington's crossing of the Delaware on Christmas, 1776.
The canal towpath passes through pretty areas going north toward New Hope. About two miles north of the Washington Crossing Bridge, the towpath passes near Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve. You may not feel like pedalling to the lookout tower at the top of the hill, but at lower areas there are about a thousand native wildflowers, trees, shrubs, and ferns. The tower has a nice view and may be a place for a further visit.
The towpath is beautiful as it passes houses, old building, and gardens of New Hope (picture above). New Hope is very touristy and you will have a lot of traffic bicycling through the streets of the town. There is a lot to see in town and it is worth walking around (better than struggling through crowds and traffic on a bicylcle), but of course it's an expensive place to stop to eat. The Lockhouse Interpretive Center is next to the towpath in New Hope.
An excellent and detailed description of the towns and countryside is given in the home page of homepage of the Friends of the Delaware Canal.
