There is a gap in the bike path in Schenectady as shown on map 2 of the Mohawk-Hudson Bikeway Map. and as shown here. The bike path ends at Rt. 5 (State St.). The map shows a route on city streets through the oldest area of Schenectady called The Stockade. After leaving the traffic of State Street, the ride past the old houses of the Stockade area is interesting. There are many old houses and there are several places to eat in this area. Union College which is worth cycling thorough is nearby. There is an alternate route shown on the map; cross the route 5 bridge on a bike path to the town of Scotia, then go through Collins Park and follow a short bike path to Freeman Bridge which crosses back to Schenectady and the Mohawk-Hudson Bikeway at Seneca St. We tried both routes and except for a nice ice cream and sandwich stop just across the bridge, did not like the alternate route.
