Mandatory Driver Education

In 1999, the Legislature passed Act 175 which mandates the Department of Transportation to establish and certify by January 1, 2001, a statewide driver education and behind the wheel training program for person under the age of 18 applying for a Class, 1,2 or 3 driver's license. The Director of Transportation was also directed to set fee to enable the programs to be sufficient.

the Department has established a Driver Education Task Force that is working to implement the new law.  Under the task force proposal, students will be able to meet the mandatory driver education requirements by taking:

  A 30 hour driver education and six hour behind the wheel course through the Department of  Education, UH Community Colleges or a commercial driving school;
