Book 2: Enemy

Chapter 10

Attack

"According to the information we've gathered, Germany's only military force is in Nerv 3. Since we cannot go on a direct assault, our plan is to lay siege to the base, blocking all possible routes for food, water, or medical supplies." Said Dr. Ibuki.

She stood before us, wearing the trademark white lab coat of Dr. Akagi, holding a pointer and gesturing to the screen next to her. Tactical readouts and data as well as pictures of the target were on screen. My eye was still blind, but recovering, now I could see different color blurs of the people I looked at through it. Most of the time I wore a black eye patch, this way I could see things more normally without having to close my left eye. The spiral swirl was still there, the doctor said he had no idea what it was and he couldn't make my eye look normal again. I had come to accept it and so had everyone else. Except for Asuka, who tortured me by saying I deserved it for what I did, followed by a slap and then she storm off, tears in her eyes. Rei had gotten used to it, though she did confess sometimes it scared her when she least expected to see it, particularly when I chose to take off the eye patch after wearing it for a few days straight. So, now we were going to lay a siege on Nerv-3. Dr. Ibuki rambled on about the importance of taking Nerv-3 back but I didn't hear her. I was too focused on my father. For such a cold hearted man, he was quite an interesting person. The fact that he could shut out all around him effortlessly and put the lives of the people closest to him in jeopardy was only one thing. The fact that he could keep his memories without feeling any remorse what-so-ever was another. It was the one reason I wanted to kill him. He sent my mother to the grave, he forced me into the machine which caused most of my misery, and on top of that, he incapacitated Touji using my bare hands! And now he had turned me into a monster, like him. Perhaps that was his whole plan to begin with. No one else mattered to him, they're all just pawns. Well I damn well wasn't going to let him get away with it any longer. When Dr. Ibuki stopped speaking we were dismissed. Rather than following Rei and Asuka with everyone else, I stayed behind and followed my father and Dr. Ibuki. They both walked into an un marked lab room. I walked to the viewing room and watched them, hiding. As I suspected, they were working on a secret project, mainly fucking each other, but occasionally stopping to work something. I was disgusted with my father, the way that he won Dr. Ibuki over with sex was rather intriguing but disgusting.

"Just wait you bastard." I muttered to myself.

That's when I saw what they were working on. I saw the tank. I saw the clones. The memories flooded back into my mind. The cloning room. Dr. Akagi crying. The switch. The clones smiling and then dying, crumpling into nothing but a few limbs.

"NO!" I screamed.

Apparently the viewing room was sound proof and the windows were double sided, mirrors on one side, while I could see everything that was going on from the other. They never noticed or heard me. I stormed out of the room in a rage, not knowing what to do. I ran down back to the briefing room, out the doors and to find Rei. I had to tell her. I wouldn't let them take her away from me, again. The siege would start tomorrow so I had just enough time.

"Rei!?" I shouted when I got to our room.

"Shinji? Is something wrong?" she replied, worried.

She walked out from the bedroom.

"My father and Dr. Ibuki! They're doing it again."

"What?! Are you sure!?"

"I saw the tanks."

"No. . ."

"I know."

I wrapped my arms around her, shutting my eyes tightly.

"I'm going to destroy them, right now." I stated.

She looked into my eye, pleadingly. I kissed her, pressing my body against hers, running my hands gently up and down her back. We broke off the kiss and I hugged her tightly to my chest.

"No matter what happens. I will always love you." She said, tears shining in her eyes.

I smiled and let go of her turning around and running to the tanks. I tried to open the door, it was locked. Shit. I looked around for something to use. Nothing. I went into the viewing room, no one was with the tanks but I saw the security camera. Found a fire extinguisher next to a computer console. It was the perfect size. I picked it up and hurled it through the viewing window. The window was smashed and an alarm went off. I jumped through the window and ran to the tanks. Immediately clones looked up. That's when I realized who they really were. They weren't Rei, they were the new girl, the one I just met!

"NO!" someone yelled behind me.

It was Dr. Ibuki.

"How could you, Maya! WHY!?"

She stopped. We both realized what was going on. I felt lightheaded, I found my gun in my hand. I had demanded to be given a gun shortly after I made it to Australia. It was a Desert Eagle, a popular American made hand gun that could blow a hole with a 4 inch diameter through sheet metal with one bullet. I found myself pointing it at the tank glass, the safety was off.

"WHY?!" I yelled at her.

She cringed visibly.

"Command Ikari's orders," she said, "don't do it Shinji."

The door opened again an a few security agents entered, pistols drawn.

"Don't come any closer!" I shouted.

They stopped. Asuka also walked in pulling Rei with her.

"So Shinji's going crazy eh? What else is new." she said, disapointment clearly visible in her tone.

"Asuka, please don't." Rei said calmly.

"Shut up Wondergirl, I don't take orders from dolls."

Rei flinched.

"Asuka shut your fucking mouth right now before I blow a hole through your fucking head." I screamed.

She jumped back, out the doorway.

"Where's Commander Ikari!" she demanded.

That drew the line.

"My father can go fuck himself to hell for what he's done. He's cloning another innocent life with Angel DNA and all you can think about is whether or not I'm going crazy?!" I yelled.

"Cause I've got some news for you." I muttered, looking at the glass, my gun lowered to my side.

In one quick movement, the security agents jumped at me. I jumped back and shot seven holes into the glass tank, the first 5 just denting the glass, the 6th cracking it and the 7th shattering straight through. The clones began to die, falling apart, un used to being outside of their cage. Each and every one of them died. The Security agents didn't have time to deal with me as I made my escape. I ran through the broken viewing room glass and out into the hall, running passed people as they made their way to the room with the dying clones. I was on the homestretch when Asuka intercepted me, delivering an elbow to my head. The entire world began to spinning. She tackled me to the ground and pinned me. My lungs refused to work, I couldn't breath. She was choking me.

"You son-of-a-bitch!" She screamed, "I'll kill you!"

My vision became clouded by the red, the wolf howl began to ring in my ears. I snarled and grabbed her wrists. Wrenching myself free of her grip, I threw her to the floor and got up. She lunged at me again, I kicked her out of the way.

"Leave me alone! I had to do it." I shouted at her.

"You killed him. You killed my only way out of this. You killed the dummy system. YOU BASTARD!"

So that was it. She wanted out and Commander Ikari knew. It was a set-up. That's why he didn't notice me, he wanted me to find out, so I would destroy the dummy system and force her to stay.

"Oh no." I whispered.

She punched my left eye. I screamed in pain and nearly lost my conciousness right then and there.

"Fucking little bitch! I didn't know!!" I shouted, blindly running away the best I could.

She kicked me in the back, pain surging through my body. She pinned me again, but that's when I heard the yell.

"Freeze!"

I coughed up some blood.

"Cynthia?"

"Get off of him Asuka before I shoot your brains out."

She didn't move. A crowd was beginning to assemble watching her. I finally gained enough strength to push her away. She sprawled on the floor and was soon grabbed and cuffed by a few security agents. I felt them begin to put cuffs around my own wrists as well. That's when I lost consciousness and saw nothing but black.

Chapter 11

A Long Night

That night I spent living in a jail cell. My father had dismissed what I had done as temporary insanity and I was confined to a cell until daybreak when the siege would commence. That arrogant bastard! I knew exactly what was going on. He would wait until he had used me for his plans and then send me off on my way to the asylum again. He never counted on the plan I had. Nothing would send me back to that hell! I would wait.

The night was hell. Nothing to do but stare at the walls and sleep. I was starving, having not eaten at all before the events of the past. Asuka was treated for her injuries and then sent to her room where she would stay for a while. Before I was taken away I yelled to Rei to talk to the new girl and tell her the truth. I slept for a while.

When I woke up the sun was out and I was being helped up by Rei.

"What's going on?" I asked.

"We're starting the Siege." she said, a sad look on her face.

"Something's wrong. What happened?"

She didn't say anything. I didn't push the question, but got up and stretched. I turned to her smiled.

"I've got a plan even my father couldn't find a way through, I won't let anything happen to you, we're going to be free of the Eva's and my father soon enough."

"That girl is. . .dead." she suddenly said.

"What?!"

"She couldn't take the truth that I told her. She jumped over the railings of the cage where they're holding Unit-09."

I felt my knees giving out.

"Rei, help me."

I began to fall. She caught me and helped me to the ground gently.

"God dammit!" I cried, "It's all my fault!!"

"No. It's not your fault that she threw her life away. Clone or not, I've learned to love and that's enough to keep me alive."

She hugged me to her chest as I cried.

"I know, I shouldn't be like this. But I wasted a life and know it's you, me, and Asuka, and she wants to kill me. I've destroyed everything just by coming back!"

"But you gave me a new life. A new way. I love you, not because of what you do, but because of who you are."

She kissed me, I wouldn't let go.

* * *

When Rei had helped me resolve what had happened we were escourted to the Eva's. With my new wings, I could carry the others while bringing us to our destination. Soon the enemy would fall. But I had a feeling that soon would be too soon. For some reason I felt as though we had neglected something. I couldn't put a finger on what it was. That's when it hit me. Tokyo-3, what about them. The Germans could have taken over while we were stuck in Australia for a pointless cause.

"Rei. What about Tokyo-3?"

She blinked.

"Are you thinking. . .Oh my god!"

"Yeah. What if Germany sent the rest of their force, abandoned Nerv-3 and went to ours. Then they would have the Eva series as well as Lilith and Adam."

She blinked again in surprise.

"How did you find all this out?"

"Kensuke kept in touch while I was in the asylum. He's quite an extraordinary hacker these days."

That's when we heard the alert.

"All personal standby for lift off. It has been announced that as of today, Nerv and Tokyo-3 have been under siege and taken over by Germanies forces. They are ready to launch the remaining N2 mines and N2 bombs from orbit on various places throughout the world. However, it will take them approximately 3 days to gain control of the satelites." said Misato, over the com.

"I knew it."

We were about to lay siege to our own city.

"Evangelion Unit-01. Your orders are to carry Unit's 02 and 04 to Tokyo-3 where you will then attempt to regain control of Nerv. They have the advantage of the Eva Series but we have our own S2 organs. Over and out."

"Alright. Standby for lift off."

I knew that it would be intense, as did everyone else, but we never thought that we'd end up laying siege to our own home. This was pure madness. With them in control of the Eva Unit-05 Mass Production Series, we were fucked. When I was launched to the surface I activated my wings. I could feel the quick sharp pain at my shoulder blades as they came out. The pain was gone the next minute and Unit-02 and 04 had firm holds onto me. I spread my wings and flew. I flew faster than before. Japan was closer so it was an easy flight. I had plugged in the coordinates from my memory and kept remembering the route so I wouldn't have to pay too much attention to what was going on. I heard Rei talking to Asuka, Asuka yelling at Rei, Rei yelling back, and Asuka finally shutting up. I looked at Rei through the screen. She looked worried. I should have said something but Japan was close by.

"You two know what to do. We land, we get in position, we wait for orders." I said.

Misato and the others were being flown in orbit in order to get to Tokyo in a short time.

"Right, and if you get killed I'll try not to forget to tell Misato." said Asuka.

"Asuka!" exclaimed Rei.

Asuka didn't answer. So she wanted me dead, not surprising. If she could understand what I had become, she wouldn't be such a bitch about it, but that's her way. Just as we made our approach that same feeling hit me again. Everything became red. The wolf appeared again, a hungry cunning look on it's face. It howled and a blood red moon before growling at me. I growled back, it lunged, I lunged we hit each other. He knocked me down. That's when I realized, my body was about to go berserk again.

"Rei Asuka!! JUMP OFF!!" I screamed before the wolf lunged inside my body once more.

This time I was able to see and hear everything I was doing, but I wasn't in control. I had landed on the ground and lunged into the firing cannons and tanks knocking them away, batting them like flies. They were all being killed by me and I couldn't stop. By the time the White Eva Series had launched into the air, every single tank, cannon, artillery, truck, soldier, and any other armored vehicle or troop was dead or destroyed. I heard Rei screaming and Asuka yelling. One of the white Eva's threw it's sword down at me. I jumped back before the sword hit, picked up the weapon and hurled it back at a greater speed, knocking the White Demon out of the sky. I ran to were it fell and began to. . .eat it. I felt like I was going to throw up. Unit-01 was eating the Eva, it found the core and gobbled it up as if it were dinner.

"Shinji, fight for control!!" Rei screamed.

I fought. My body began to jerk, but I could feel it. My vision began to return to normal, the wolf running to the woods. When I was in control I saw everything normally again.

"Dear god! Look at what I've done."

"It ain't over yet." stated Asuka.

The other 8 of the Eva series was waiting. They looked like ugly birds in the sky. They reminded me of my father. Always staying at a safe distance, but hitting hard when the need arose. A new found rage began to enter my mind. A compartment opened on one of my shoulder blades and a progressive knife came out. I spread my wings and flew up slashing into one of the Eva's and bringing the rest down to the ground with me. They followed me down to where Asuka and Rei were waiting, weapons in hand. As soon as I was clear they opened fire with their Pallet Rifles. The first three of the White Eva's were riddled with bullets and slammed to the ground. I ran to those three, cutting through their middles, finding their cores and stabbing straight through them. The first two did nothing as they died, but the third jolted upright and swung at me. I bashed it to the ground in fury and crushed it's core with my bare hands. I turned to see that the other White Eva's were gone, as were Rei and Asuka.

"Rei?! Asuka!! Where are you??!!" I screamed.

No answer.

"Oh God! Please Answer me!"

No answer.

Frantically I ran around searching for them. Luckily they weren't destroyed, but they were taken by the White Eva's. I looked towards the area they came out before and saw one going in, pulling Unit-04.

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!" I screamed, feeling the blood thirsty wolf lunge back into my soul. However, this time I was in control of everything, except for my hatred. I brought my wings back into action and flew straight at the White Demon. I slammed it to the ground just before it could jump into the opening which would lead it to Nerv. I gripped it's throat and popped it's head off almost instantly. It shuddered and exploded, not moving me an inch. Unit-04 was silent, perhaps Rei and jettisoned the plug. But that meant that the enemy could have taken the plug in first.

"Fuck a siege, I'm going straight in!"

I jumped into the opening and dove through the darkness, crawling on my stomach. I crawled for some time before reaching my first obstacle. A huge, closed, and probably locked, metal door was in my way. I found one of the White Eva's swords, so I picked it up. I could feel the hate and rage going through my body and the sword in my hand molded itself into a glowing sword of fire. I slammed it straight through the door way and smashed into the control room. I looked at the frightened German's. So they had killed everyone else or locked them in terminal dogma. One of the Unit-05 Eva's slammed through the wall. I backhanded it and ripped it in half, crushing the core. That's when my Eva smiled. I don't know how, but it did. It gave an evil twisted grin, I could feel it grinning.

The control moved on it's own. Both of them pushed forward and the Eva smashed through the people in the Bridge, killing them all. It then slaughtered every single person inside that room. I finally regained control and pulled out of the base. I began looking for the other entry plugs. I couldn't find them. This meant only one thing, I had to go back and search the base for them. I charged back to the base and found a few more people still alive, looking at the slaughter with horror. I turned on the external speakers.

"Where are the Entry Plugs of the other Evangelions." I stated, cold and harshly.

One of them trembled, the other two complied immediately.

"Terminal Dogma."

"With the rest?" I asked.

"Yes!!"

They fled after that. I crashed through a new wall and jumped down the tunnel to Terminal Dogma. I had been there only once before, when I learned about Rei and about Lilith, and when I fought Kaoru. I landed in that same snow covered area and walked to the door leading to Terminal Dogma. I kicked it, watching it fly and hit Lilith, who was still attached to cross. I peered through, seeing many Nerv Techs and officers, the plugs were there, opened, and Rei and Asuka both stood with looks of shock on their faces. Rei yelled, something I couldn't make out, pointing at me.

Sensing danger I turned around to see a Black Sword come crashing down at me. I brought my own sword up and made contact with it. The Remainder of the Eva Series wanted a fight, but I couldn't let them do it down here. Spreading my wings I flew back up the tunnel and out into the open air. I landed and waited. I saw them jump out, one after another. Five of them, circled the skies ready to plunge down upon me at any minute. I held my sword up, spread my wings and flew.

"DIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIEE!!"

Chapter 12

Fight For Life

"DIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIEE!!" I screamed at the top of my lungs.

I smashed into the whole lot of them, bringing them down to the ground. I punched through one, kicking the head off of another. I swung the sword in a full arch, cutting another one in half and severing a limb from the yet another. One was still standing and we locked in sword combat again. I struck, he struck back, neither of us gaining the upper-hand, until I tripped and he knocked my sword out of my hand. I did a roundhouse kick, sending him to the ground. I took this opportunity to smash they other's cores before they could get back up. I crunched each one, causing a sickeningly, thudding noises. The final Eva got back on it's feet and gave me a glare. He caught me off guard with a full on frontal assault. First he kicked me in the stomach, then he punched me in the side and then he picked me up and threw me into a building. He lunged forth at me, getting my fist shoved into his face. However, I didn't use enough force to knock his head off. He gripped my right arm and began to twist it behind my back. I heard the snap as my arm broke.

"AAAAAAAAAARRRGH! You Son-of-a-bitch!!" I screamed.

He had torn off my Eva's arm, it was useless now. I kicked him through his middle. He punched me in the head, knocking me senseless. He lifted me up and flew to the sky. I finally regained what little senses I had left and began to struggle, thrashing about in his arms causing him to lose his grip. I straddled his waist with my legs and began to punch his core with all my might. I punched straight through him and his core, causing him to die. Unfortunately, I took this time to look down and nearly feinted right there.

I was about a mile above the ground and falling fast. I tried to activate the wings, but I couldn't without my other arm. I plummeted to the ground.

"Good bye Rei. I'm sorry." I whispered.

A white light flashed before my eyes just as I hit the ground.

The White Light

A voice began to speak to me, it was soft and sounded like my mothers.

"Shinji. Is this what you really want? To die?"

"Yes. I've caused too much pain to everyone. My life won't matter any longer."

"But what about everything you've gone through? Do you really want to leave?"

"What does it matter?!" I yelled. "No matter what I do, I cause pain to myself, and the ones I care for."

"Asuka is a result, you think? Oh my poor Shinji. I wish you could understand. It's not your time yet. You're only 18. You haven't lived a normal life since you were born."

"So why should it matter."

"Think about who you're leaving behind. The girl you love. Your friends. Everything. You won't see them for a long, long time."

"Rei. . ." I whispered.

"Do you see?" she asked, becoming visible. It was my mother. Just as I remembered her, before she died.

". . ."

"There is so much in life that's worth living for. No matter how many bad things can happen, you will survive. That's your nature my son. You are a survivor." She said, putting her hand on my shoulder.

I hugged her. Crying into her shoulder. She wrapped her arms around me, caressing my back.

"I understand now. I have to go. I don't want to leave you though." I cried.

"My son, you'll never leave me, as long as you pilot the Eva, I'll be with you always. And when the Eva is finally destroyed, I'll see you when your life comes to it's end."

I let go and looked into her eyes.

"I love you mother." I said.

"I love you too Shinji. I always will."

I turned and walked away from the white light. I heard a faint water drop before I realized I wasn't inside the Eva. Everything was still dark. That's when I heard her faint crying. Or should I have said screaming? It was a mixture of both.

"Get up!" Rei screamed, "don't you dare die! GET THE FUCK UP!!"

I tried to move. I couldn't do anything. I couldn't even breath. She must have hit me, cause I felt a strange impact on my chest. Then her lips met mine and she began to push air down my throat. Standard Procedure CPR. I finally managed to let out a raspy cough. I forced my eyes to open and I weakly looked at Rei. I was lying on the ground near Unit-01. The Eva's chest had been impaled by a sword that was lying point up in the ground. Rei was crying, she collapsed on me.

"Don't you ever do that to me again!" she cried.

I saw the bridge workers, Aoba Shigeru and Hyuga Makoto, Asuka and a few other Nerv Techs and officers. Asuka looked scared but slightly disappointed. As if she would be sad if I died, but she was disappointed that I didn't die. Well Asuka, I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I'm staying alive, thank you. I strained and put and arm around Rei.

"I'm sorry." I whispered.

"I nearly lost you again." she sobbed.

"I promise I'll never do something like that again."

I smiled weakly at her. She smiled back.

"I don't know Shinji. It seems that trouble just has it's way of finding you."

I laughed, as did everyone else, save the red head.

"Yes," I said, "yes it does."
