Chapter 19

Exodus

I woke up in my section of the cave. Mariko was cuddling up next to me, keeping warm. We were both in our wolf forms. Though it didn't look like it, we were not mates. Unlike the other members of the tribe, we didn't have mates. My only mate was Rei and that would not be acceptable, unless she was a werewolf, to the elders. So I decided to remain alone. Mariko didn't want a mate until she understood more about herself and what she wanted. So she would fend for her self from the males who tried to take her during the mating season. Every mating season I would go far away from the tribes cave, where my personal cave was and I would shackle myself, in my war form against a wall with the titanium shackles I had bought in some underground shop. During the mating season, the male's minds are driven by the scent of the female's pheromones and it drives us mad. We fight each other for a mate or defend our current mate. I didn't feel I could love anyone else except for Rei. None of the females of the pack could understand that. It made them feel jealous of a human. Well, not that Rei was exactly "human", but it still made them jealous.

It would be mating season soon. I had to get away from the pack and hide out. I didn't want to hide in my cave again though. When I went to check in on it, I found that there had been someone else there and they had stolen my shackles and torn everything apart. The only things that survived was a secret picture of Rei and I, that I had managed to keep from my escapades in the city as, "a stranger" in a black coat. The citizens of Tokyo-3 lived a normal life now-a-days. They didn't have to deal with giant robots, Angels, or war, like I had to. Nerv had to expanded it's fields to keep itself alive. Little known to the public, they had a secret organization called COBALT, a group of trained agents, whose job was to track down any creature of parallel dimension of mythical origin, capture or destroy to commit scientific experiments on them. The only reason that the population had not been told about it was because of elaborate government coverups, a huge sham. They blamed it on gangs and murderers and psychopaths when a werewolf was trying to escape and killed a few people to do so. That's why only Rei could know the truth or they'd be after me. Ever since the angels disappeared, the newspapers began to have articles about "Sightings" of the locals. They'd have things about vampires, lycanthropes, ghosts, magi, even dragons. The hidden world that I discovered had actually been around for a long time and if COBALT found a way to unveil the masquerade to the world, we would all become hunted down to extinction.

I walked away from my cave, wearing my usual clothing arrangement. I couldn't hide like this forever. Now that COBALT had found my secret cave they would begin to inquire about me to...I stopped dead in my tracks. They'd go straight to Rei. The sudden realization hit me like a ton of bricks. I had to find her and get her away from here. Who knew what COBALT was up to? Whatever it was could destroy whatever reality I have left.

I shifted into the black wolf. The feeling of my bones and sinew snapping and altering it's formation was breath taking as it always was. The feeling of my clothing disappearing from time and matter was just as breath taking. I was the wolf, running through my forest. Down the mountains. Down to the city where the girl I loved was in danger. That's when something odd entered my mind. My father never knew my mother's real origins as a werewolf and if he used her DNA to create Rei then that meant...Rei was a hybrid werewolf/Angel. COBALT would find out if I didn't get her first. As soon as I reached the end of the forest I shifted back. I checked for passerby's, seeing none, before I walked out casually and set a fast paced walk to Rei's apartment.

Most members of COBALT were still obvious, even though they tried to fit in. They all wore their same black sunglasses and their same black trench coats, which they usually hid a weapon under They were hunting me, I knew it. If they knew about the pack, or if they knew that the wolf they were looking for was me, I didn't know, but I had to warn Rei, I had to bring her to the pack, get her inside, hide her. Fuck, I should've known. I was about ten minutes away from her apartment when I saw the black vans pass by. Shit! I ran the rest of the way, fallowing the van. The van was parked outside of her apartment complex. Oh god! I saw them just starting to get out of the van and I lost it. I lost my hatred for my father and everything he's caused and it went straight into my mind, channeling my shift. I shifted right there, before they could see me and barreled into them in my gigantic battle form, smashing through them like toys. One man's arm was ripped off, blood spurting from the torn muscle and the empty socket where the bone once was. I had cleft it off with one powerful stroke and I enjoyed it. These men deserved to have my wrath taken out on them. Bolted through the door to Rei's section and into an already open elevator with a frightened woman standing in it. I casually pressed the third floor button and gave her a toothy grin. She fainted and I just stood there. If I could have whistled I probably would've.

The elevator made it's "ding" sound and the door opened to show the gun barrel of a AR-33 staring at me. I growled, ducking faster then the human reflex, and sliced the man dressed in black straight through his torso. His lower half fell before his upper half, blood spilling on the floor, his ripped intestines and organs spilling out as well. The others were later then the now deceased, and weren't able to delay me any longer. I bolted to Rei's room and torn open the door. She looked up startled, but knew it was me. I would've starting yelling but all I could do was roar. I lifted her into my arms and bolted out of the room, smashing through a window and falling a mere three story's landing on my feet on the pavement. A heard a woman shriek and I ran for the hills. I ran hard and fast with the aid of my form. Rei was clutching my arm tightly, like she thought she was going to fall off. I ran into the woods, and set Rei down, changing into my dire wolf form. In that form I looked like a gigantic wolf that seemingly defied the laws of gravity. I motioned for her to climb onto my back and hold on tight. She understood and did so. I started nimbly jumping bushes and running through the woods of the hill sides. Reaching a different cave that I knew about and bringing her in there. I shifted again and stood before her as a human being as soon as she jumped to the ground.

She gave me a tight embrace.

"What's going on?" She asked.

"It's hard to explain, but here's what I know. You may not realize it, but you're just like me. I remembered what I saw long ago. The tanks...I remember what Dr. Akagi told me that day. They used my mothers DNA and the DNA of Lillith. Remember? That's how you were created. If they used my mothers DNA...then it would make you the same as me." I explained.

"You mean. I'm a werewolf?"

I nodded. She looked shocked, beyond belief. I hugged her tighter. I could hear the choppers coming from two miles away. The sound of a COBALT chopper. I let go of her and looked into her eyes. I saw them change from round circles to slits. Oh no. Not now! She was shifting. Her clothing ripped and tore apart at the seams. Her skin disappeared and a white fur covered her body. She grew about three or four feet taller. Her arms and legs became like pure muscle. She was thinner then most other female's I'd seen. She howled and looked scared.

"Come on, we've got to run! You hear those choppers?"

She nodded. I shifted then too. Of course, my clothing was bonded spiritually and it didn't rip like hers did. I lifted a giant boulder to reveal my secret exit and told Rei to go in. She jumped in and I followed, pulling the boulder back into place, making sure no light would be let out or through.

"Follow me." I said, using thought speak.

When in any non humanoid form, a werewolf can only communicate to other werewolves using thought speak.

"Alright." She replied.

I ran, fallowing a passage, Rei right behind me. The passage would lead to a secret exit in the woods about three miles from the pack den. From there we snuck easily to the fourth secret entrance to the den and entered. All the others looked up surprised to see me and the white wolf. Mariko was the first to approach me.

"Who's the albino?" She asked.

"This is Rei."

The collective gasp of the pack was audible. Even the elders looked funnily at me. Rei looked a bit timid considering she was surrounded by werewolves, even if she was the only one that was in war form.

"I can't explain what's happened, but COBALT is searching for us, the only way is for us to migrate. He have to get the fuck out of here, fast."

The pack leader looked me over and then frowned before turning to announcing to everyone the order to pack up and leave. We packed up all of out belongings, human possessions and shifter possessions and left the cavern, barren. We acted as though we were just casual travelers enjoying a mass group walk, splitting up and taking separate trains to the Harbor. We were going to move, to America. There we'd be safe, no one could follow us. There we'd live normal lives without needing to worry about groups like COBALT. There I could find happiness with Rei. Yes, I'd like that.

The End
