How To Secure your Computer or Network - A Step by Step Approach

This section explains, step-by-step, how to secure your computer against spyware, hackers, and hijackers. While there is no such thing as total security, it can vastly reduce your vulnerability to unauthorized access to and from your computer.
There are two routes you can take: the quick-and-dirty 4 Step route, or the much more secure 8 Step route. The quick-and-dirty way gives little in the way of explanations: it basically says "do this and this". The normal total time to go through it, not including downloads, is about 15 minutes.
If you choose the better 8-Step way, you'll get more complete explanations of each step before it is carried out and what the effects will be. It will take a little longer to do mostly because I explain what you're doing and why. Either way, some individual steps may reduce functionality of your computer (which usually is what you want) but it will be explained in the 8-Step section.
