Summary
of Act Four
Hale went to jail to
persuade people to save their life by making false confessions and to save
their souls. Hale asked Elizabeth to persuade Proctor to lie and save himself,
she balks but agrees to see him. Elizabeth forgives Proctor been unfaithful and
she blamed herself for not being able to love him enough. She could not suggest
him to lie, so she tells Proctor to make his own decision and to be his own
judge. Proctor refused to put his name out of confesses to being a witch in
order to save his own life so he tears up his confession. When Proctor tears up
his confession, Elizabeth rushed to him and they embraced. When Proctor and
Rebecca Nurse are led to hung, Hale begs Elizabeth to persuade Proctor to save
himself, but Elizabeth cries, "He have his goodness now. God forbid I take
it from him."
