William Faulkner's Speech

What's the relation between writing and human spirit? William Faulkner believed the relation between writing and human spirit is that writing can up lift human spirit. Because if his believed and work that helped him won the Nobel Prize in literature in 1949. William Faulkner was an American novelist and short story writer, who was one of the most important figures in 20th Century literature. He won the Nobel Prize after World War II.

He said and asked himself a question "When will I be blown up? Because of this, the young man or woman writing today had forgotten the problems of the human heart in conflict with itself which alone can make good writing because only that is worth writing about, worth the agony and the sweat." He knew everyone still remembered the disaster from the WWII and still not recovered yet. He didn't know what will happen next and when the next disaster going to be. Also when and will he himself die in the next disaster. That's not important, what important is that he think a good writing should help people to forget about their fears and move on with their lives. He taught himself and other people to forget about their fears by writing the reflection of human spirit.

He thinks a good writing is about the truth of the human heart. He thinks a writer should write about the story that is ephemeral such as love and honor and pity and pride and compassion and sacrifice.

In his speech, he said: "I believe that man will not merely endure: he will prevail. He is immortal, not because he along among creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance. The poet's, the writer's, duty is to write about these thing." What he means was that all the writers should write about the truth that come from the hear, the mercy and the fortitude. He believed everyone has a soul, if they didn't lift the human soul then it is not going to be a good writing.

In consequence a good writing should include the truth of a human's heart even it lasts for a short term. A good writing should include the varieties of human spirit and compassion.
