Gods andBrownies

I sat on my front lawn watching the people pass by. Some on cars some on bikes, some on foot, yet all the same in one aspect. Every single one of them was oblivious to my presence. Two girls walked by me chatting on their way to school. I should be in school too, but that doesn't matter. It might be ok, going to school, having friends. I don't think I have anyone I could call my friend. It doesn't bother me, and I'm not lying either, I'm happy. Sitting on my front lawn on a warm spring day with my flute resting beside me. I had just finished playing. I lay back on the soft grass lifting my long brown hair so that I would not lie on it. Content to just lie there with the sun pouring down on my face.

It may have been and hour later, but it felt like only a few minutes when I felt a familiar form settle beside me.

"My Lord." I murmur without bothering to sit up or even open my eyes.

" I saw her again today." The god sighed. Then I opened my eyes, looking at the handsome face of the god next to me. His eyes were closed and the long lashes fluttered against pale cheeks. His lean form was slouched, his long arms wrapped around his bent knees. I sat up and he reached over and pulled me against him, settling me against him and resting his cheek against my hair. I fit against him as easily as I always had.

"What's the matter?" I asked softly. Resting my hands over his. Our skin contrasted so much; he was pale whereas I was a dark tan. I suppose it suited an earth elemental and a fire god.

"She doesn't even know I exist."

"Go to her as a human then." I suggest, keeping my voice soft and comforting. I had to admit that I was at least a little jealous of the beautiful, fiery girl that he had fallen for. But our relationship had never been romantic, and after I got over my original crush on the handsome god I'll readily admit that I didn't want it to be. He was my guardian, my father and my friend. I was his daughter, his student, and now that I had finally grown up enough to understand him entirely, his friend. And life was nice like that, right and happy.

"I can't, she'll treat me the same way that she does the other human guys. That's not what I want."

"I know." I said. "Come inside, I'll make some bread and we can try and figure out what to do about this Rose."

"Thank you, Bella."

"Loki, one of these days you know you will have to let some of the others try my cooking rather than eating it all yourself before you go back." He laughed making his deep blue eyes dance.

"Do I have to?" He teased as we stood up and I reached for my flute.

"Yes, you must." I said, mock sternly as he slung his arm about my shoulder and we headed inside my small house.

A week or so later I was in the kitchen going through my herbs and writing a list of the ones I was low on.

"Ginger, honey, boneset, mullein…" I was listing when there was a knock on the door. I stood up, wondering who it was; Loki never knocked, and no one else ever came to see me. I opened the door.

"Isabella Barton?" The girl standing there asked. I nodded, then I recognized her. This was Loki's Rose. Slender and pale, with shining brown eyes and short, dark hair.

"What can I do for you?" I asked, not smiling, but not harsh at all, just polite.

"I'm Rose Bennitt. I'm doing a project for school on Norse mythology, and someone told me that you knew quite a bit about it, so I was wondering if you'd teach me. I'd pay you of course." She added in a rush.

"Well…" I paused for a minute, thinking.

'Do it.' I head Loki's voice say inside my head.

'Hmm?'

'I was the one who told her. I over heard her talking to a teacher and disguised myself as a student.' He sounded very pleased with himself; I could barely restrain myself from laughing.

"You don't have to pay me." I told her.

"You will then?"

I nodded and she smiled. I could see why he had fallen for her. She really was beautiful. "When do you want to start?" I asked her.

"When ever's good for you." She told me. "My project's not due for a month."

"We can start whenever you want." I replied. "Now, if you'd like."

"Cool! Thank you."

'Loki, go wait in the kitchen.' I sent. I could almost hear him grinning. Suddenly the smell of brownies assailed my nose, reminding me that I should check on them.

"Why don't you come into the kitchen." I suggested. "Do you like brownies?" I asked leading her to the kitchen.

"So that's what the smell is!" She laughed. "Of course."

"Good." I said as we entered the kitchen. Loki was sitting at the table; all my herbs had been put away. Rose blinked at him as she entered. I chuckled.

"Rose, this is my friend Loki. He knows ever more about Norse myths than I do."

Rose nodded at Loki. "I like your name." She commented. "After the Norse god of fire, right?"

"You could say that." Loki chuckled. Rose smiled, lighting her face up like a fairy.

"Cool!"

"So what do you want to know?" Loki asked Rose. I chuckled at the contentment on his face. 'It's only a matter of time.' I thought as I bent to take the brownies out of the oven.

End. Guess what's true.
