For Loki-kun…who has totally no attachment to 'Loki' from Dogma…hell, I have no attachment to 'Loki' from Dogma! Loki belongs to him (though I admit to some changes) the rest of the charas are mine...gifts to Loki-kun of course, espically Corin...
Prologue
Loki sighed, purring slightly as he curled in towards the fire, watching the scene on the other side of it. The Kelling's house was so warm, lit with so many fires. The human's were fire mages after all. But Loki was staring out of the fire, into the elf world, the world of the air mages. Human's had a fascination with those lithe, beautiful often-arrogant creatures. Loki didn't really mind the elves, but he preferred the Dwarves, the nice, practical earth mages. And then there were the naiads…Loki shuddered; no cat in their right mind liked naiads…even if they were half-human and even if the naiads were somewhat pretty. They were water and water was, well, wet. Loki shuddered and Sasha, the Kelling's daughter, reached down to pet his blue hair.
"Comfortable?" Sasha asked, smiling at him through deep green eyes. Loki nodded, smiling and purring for her. Another cat-person, curled up next to a small girl, laughed.
"Loki, you're going to catch a spark."
Loki lolled his head towards the cat-woman. "Don't worry mama."
The cat-woman, who had long, honey colored hair the same color as her fur, nodded. The girl next to her flickered a flame over her fingers; a trick all human's learned at an early age. Sasha laughed at her younger sister.
"Mercy, if you're going to practice, try and learn something useful," Sasha teased, still absentmindedly petting Loki's hair. The cat-woman nodded, agreeing.
"You'll catch something on fire," she pointed out.
"No I won't," Mercy protested. "Will I, Loki?"
"No comment," Loki murmured. "I wanna eat tonight."
Sasha laughed petting Loki's brown ears.
"You won't miss dinner, Lok, you wouldn't let yourself."
"Sash, Mercy! Loki, Ashla! Dinner!"
Loki got to his feet and hurried out, followed more sedately by his mother and the two girls.
Dinner at the Kelling's tended to alternate between fending for yourself and a rather grand affair. That night it was the latter. Everyone was seated on the ornate chairs around the grand dining room table. Mimi and Ford Kelling sat at the head and foot of the table. Mimi Kelling all proud and fiery, Ford tall, lanky, and strong. A bit like Loki's own father, Lor, who sat at Ford's right hand, listening intently to the human's descriptions of his work. The cat-people didn't work. They were dependants on the humans, that was how it was. Some human families had several cat-human families, or none, but there were no cat-humans that went without humans. Or if there were they died early. Somehow they had just never adapted to living on their own. They could not fend for themselves the way cats could, nor could they perform magic or get human jobs. What they did do however, was magic amplification, that and be amazingly smart.
"Mercy, Sasha was just saying that you did wonderfully in your lessons today," Mimi smiled, turning to her younger daughter. Mercy nodded.
"The teach said that I can move up to the next class in a week if I keep it up," she said, proud. Loki smiled, dipping his head to eat. Sasha petted absently at his hair with her left hand as she ate. Loki purred slightly, the meat from dinner warm on his cat-tongue.
"And so the rating are up thirty four percent…" Mr. Kelling continued at the other end of the table. Loki smiled, he knew this was right, perfect.
That night Loki was still purring as he curled up at the end of Sasha's bed, pulling his dark blue blanket up to his chin. Sasha was already asleep. It was so warm…Loki purred, then stiffened. Too warm. In fact, it was far too warm, something was wrong. His head snapped up…smoke. He smelled smoke.
"Sasha!"
"Get out, Loki!" The flames were lapping at the girl's door as she tried to force her way through them, most of them merely licking over her, most of them…
"Sash…!"
"Get out, Loki! You're too young! Get out!"
Loki gulped, she was right, he was too young for proper amplification…so he sprinted to the window, the second story window, and jumped out. Landing on his feet. He was the only one out of the burning house. And the naiads were there, water streaming from their pale blue hands, attempting to douse what he now recognized as mage fire. And then came the boom. And he screamed.
Well? I know...it's just prologue, merely setup. It might get long...
