Book 2 (Hmmmm…)
From now on they really are constantly together.
Chapter 1: The Departure of Boromir
· Legolas and Gimli are now fighting back to back, as a team. They come running in together as Boromir is dying. (No, I do not think they were doing anything besides fighting orcs.)
Chapter 2: The Riders of Rohan
· When Éomer threatens Gimli for chastising him Legolas automatically stands up for Gimli, even to the point of threatening Éomer with his bow and arrows.
" 'He stands not alone,' said Legolas, bending his bow and fitting
an arrow with hands that moved quicker than sight. 'You would die
before your stroke fell.'"
(Rather a strong statement, don't you think?)
· When Éomer is doubtful of giving a horse to a dwarf and Gimli refuses anyway Legolas suggest that Gimli share a horse with him and Gimli accepts. And Gimli ends up sitting behind him. (Now, does anyone but me realize how sexy this is? If you're sitting behind someone on a horse and you're moving at all it's all too easy that his or her hips are moving back into yours at every stride. It's sexy. And they share a horse for the rest of the series.)
· Not to mention they tease each other.
" 'Only a few hours ago you were unwilling to sit on a horse of
Rohan,' laughed Legolas. 'You will make a rider yet.'
'It seems unlikely that I shall have the chance,' Said Gimli."
Chapter 6: The king of the golden hall
· Are constantly with each other. First talking as they go to battle with the Rohirrim. And Gimli confides somewhat in Legolas.
" '…How shall I come to battle? I wish I could walk and not
bump like a sack at Gandalf's saddlebow.'"
· Then when Éomer asks Gimli to ride with him Gimli insists that Legolas stay with them.
" 'I will gladly go with you, if Legolas, my comrade, may
ride beside us.'"
(May I add that when Ibsen, the playwright, used the word comrade, it was inferring something like lovers)
Chapter 7: Helm's Deep
· When they're sitting together on the wall. It seems to be a comfort thing. They're so natural together. Somewhat confiding worries in each other. Though Gimli is happy to be closer to mountains again.
" 'But you comfort me, Gimli, and I am glad to have
you standing nigh with your stout legs and your hard
axe."
No, I don't think it's innuendo. But it is a whole scene devoted to the two of them. Simply together, taking comfort.
· Throughout the whole battle of Helm's Deep they are trying to out do each other. It's just cute. Yet when the really rally of orcs begin they fight side by side. Then he goes looking for Legolas after he helps Gamling. (24 to Gimli's 21)
· When Legolas has run out of arrows he asks Aragorn where Gimli is and he is rather worried when Aragorn tells him they were 'swept apart'. When Aragorn assures him that Gimli is safe his line is:
"That must be my hope."
Chapter 8: The rode to Isengard
· When Gimli finally turns up again his score of dead orcs is one higher than Legolas' but the elf doesn't care. (My favorite Legolas line!)
"But I do not grudge you the game, so glad am I to
see you on your legs!"
They then disappear for the rest of the scene.
· On the way to Isengard, again, they're sharing a horse.
"Legolas and Gimli were now riding together upon
one horse;…"
Remember what I said earlier? 'S sexy.
· Then there's the loooong scene with the two of them. The one where they decided to go to the Cavern's of Helm's deep together and then to Fangorn. Gimli says:
"…But I will endure Fangorn, if I have your promise
to come back to the caves and share their wonder
with me."
· Gimli automatically classifies them together and no, does not include Aragorn when yelling (good naturally) at Merry because of the goose chase they were lead on after the hobbits. And Legolas lets him speak for him
"And what about your companions? What about Legolas
and me?" …
" 'You speak for me, Gimli,' laughed Legolas."
Really couples do start to do this eventually. (Heh, I know I do.)
Chapter 9: The Voice of Saruman
· Gimli speaks for Legolas again when they're going towards Saruman's tower and Gandalf tries to leave them behind. Again, Legolas simply lets him.
"Legolas and I wish for a closer view. We alone
here represent our kindreds. We also will come
behind."
· Legolas sticks up very staunchly for Gimli to Treebeard. And compliments him rather nicely I think. He also seems to show a great tendency to want to stay with the dwarf.
"…but while Gimli lives I shall not come to
Fangorn alone. His axe is not for trees, but for
orc-necks,"
Really they aren't in the rest of the second book (it switches to Sam and Frodo). And I was going to check and see if they were mentioned, but I was tired, so this is it for The Two Towers (Who's preview comes out on Friday!!!)
