(12) ZERO RYOKO
Well, after a while I've decided to review some of the cuts, redubs and
censors made in a Tenchi Muyo! episode. I decided to choose another action
packed episode for my second review, naturally "ZERO RYOKO" was an obivous
choice ("WE NEED TENCHI! (6)" being my second).
SUMMARY: The last episode had left us with a shocking cliffhanger where the
android, Zero (disguised as Ryoko), acting from Dr.Clay's order's,
apparently kills Tenchi against her will, screaming in dismay as she does so
and leaving Dr.Clay laughing. Quite obivously, Zero doesn't kill Tenchi and
comes face to face with Washu who remarks that she knows who she really is.
The end result is a face off between Washu and Clay on his space vessel,
resulting in Clay's capture and Lady Tokimi's plans ruined. Or are they?
EDITS: These are the following edits to the Toonami edition of "ZERO RYOKO".
Change of Dialogue (C.O.D): Zero and Washu converse.
Original:
WASHU: Whatcha gonna do with that dolly? Give it to Dr.Clay? If it's a gift
I can put a ribbon on it! I didn't know he was into that sort of thing!
Toonami: The last line is cut for obivous reasons for a reference to sexual
acts to the doll.
C.O.D: Zero warns Ayeka.
Original:
ZERO: Stay out of my way or you will be killed.
Toonami:
ZERO: Stay out of my way or you will ... be destroyed.
As with Dragon Ball Z, "kill" is not an exceptable word on Cartoon Network.
Personally I can't see why they think "destroy" is better. Toonami is a
strange group of beings. Also note the unnatural pause with the words "be
destroyed" (this is probably due to the redubbing).
Cut: Ryoko's reaction to Washu's "at least it's not someone like Ayeka!"
comment. Cut for the bounciness of Ryoko's breasts.
Cut: Washu accuses Clay of being attracted to her in a sick ways and
planning to rape her as a result. Clay comments that he wouldn't want a girl
who he couldn't "tell front from back". Washu then angrly tries to undo her
shirt to prove him wrong.
This cut was envitable and although no one really expects for the 'Network
to leave this in, most fans are annoyed by the cut because after Washu stops
undoing her shirt, Toonami cut a whole chunk of important plot points (due
to Washu shirt still being half unbuttoned as Clay explained it).
Cut: Washu almost drops Clay's vase and smiles sadastically as she saves it.
Very trivial cut. Probably cut for time or Washu's smile (no good guys can
be evil. They have to bad guys to do that of course, otherwise it'd be
original and Toonami can't have that).
C.O.D: More doll sexual innduendo changed.
C.O.D: Washu insults Clay after he "kills" Zero.
Original:
WASHU: You're a terrible bastard, Clay!
Toonami: The change of dialogue is expected.
WASHU: You're a terrible monster, Clay!
Cut: Just after Washu's comment.
CLAY: Everyone is making fun of me.
After this follows a short section about Clay bitching about thrown out of
the academy, also cut.
C.O.D: Tenchi curses about not finding the control room.
Original:
TENCHI: Damn!
Toonami: The "Damn!" is turned into a "Darn!".
Cut:
Mihoshi comes to conclusion that they are trapped. Very humorous, cut was
trivial or made for time.
Cut: Shot of Clay's bloody nosed face (this causes the music to jump).
The cut may seem well deserved but a similar shot is included later,
completely uncensored. Odd, odd people ...
Cut: Washu looks at the inside of the control stick, finding it is a statue
of a naked woman.
WASHU: Bad taste! That dirty old man ... GAH!
Cut for the statue.
Cut: Washu punching through the statue after she finds out the stick is a
dud.
WASHU: DAMN!!!
Cut for either: the statue, the comment or Washu's strength. Perhaps all
three.
Cut: Mihoshi dropping Clay's vase and Washu smiling sadistically again.
WASHU: I also included some super glue in there as well.
Trivial or time cut. Or perhaps for the smile?
Cut: A scene of the ship zooming back while Ryoko curses.
RYOKO: Damn you, Washu!
Cut because of the comment.
