· Finding Important Ideas

1. Here are eight sentences which summarize different ideas from the article. Only four of them contain important ideas from the article. The other ideas are in the article but they are not as important. Read them and choose the four most important ideas.

8. Find some words from the texts that you don't know. First try to work out the meaning of each word (using your understanding of the article)  and then check their meanings in your dictionary.

16. Use an English-English dictionary to choose the most suitable definition for these words from the article and  find out whether they are nouns, verbs or  adjectives. When you have finished, compare your answers with a partner.

17. Guessing unfamiliar words: This article has a lot of colloquial or conversational words that you might not be familiar with. With a partner, try to guess  the meaning of these words. You may use a dictionary but be careful to select the correct meaning.

19.  One good way of learning vocabulary is to draw your own word tree. Fill the gaps in the diagram here with words from the article. (You may also add  any other words that you know and think are useful.)
