- Stages of Labor: Stage One -
Whats Happening:
Early labor contractions may start out as far apart as 20 minutes and last only 30 to 45 second. If the cervix has not already moved forward, softened, and effaced in preparation for labor, then these important changes in the cervix will take place once labor begins. For the easiest fit, the baby usually faces the mother's side as his head enters the top of the pelvis. During this phase the cervix will completely efface (100%), and dilateto about 3 centimeters. More of the mucous plug, or "show," may be discharged as the cervix opens. Although labor may begin with the breaking of the bag of waters, most often the membranes do not rupture until late in labor. Gradually the contractions become stronger and closer together. As labor progresses to the active phase, regular contractions may be about 5 minutes apart and last up to 60 seconds.
