He Gave Man Fire

My favorite literary character is Prometheus. I read about him from an abridged version of a play by a Greek classical playwright, entitled Prometheus Bound. In the play, the young god, Prometheus, was being punished by the superior gods of Mt. Olympus in for having given fire to men on earth. He was tied to a tree and was exhausted by inactivity.

I liked Prometheus because he was Christ figure, meaning he was like a redeemer who saved the people by giving them fire, even at the risk of losing his life. Fire can mean so many things. Fire brings heat to give warmth, light, fuel to cook food. Fire is a power symbol. In that particular play, our teacher said fire symbolizes knowledge. Knowledge is mankind's redemption. Knowledge is power.

I liked a literary character who plays hero, who goes through struggles to make goodness triumph over evil. I also like a literary character who discovers something at the end of a story, either a great love or manner of living life meaningfully; or a profound loss of something beautiful. I guess I go for heroes in tragic plays. They are so big and up there only to lose everything and fall so low. But in the end, their eyes are opened to a knowledge that is so important and enriching spiritually.
