Reading Activity No. 40

Writer of the Year

Maribel was excited. Her name was listed in the Recognition Day Program as an awardee for "Best in English" and "Writer of the Year." The "Best in English" award is given every year, but this was the first time that "Writer of the Year" will be given and she was the first to be receiving the title.

"What will you wear for the occasion?," Maribel's mother asked excitedly. We have to go shopping this noon, so your dress for tomorrow will be ready."

"Mom, our teacher said we will be wearing our school uniform."

"Is that so? Then, I have to buy you a gift. I'm so happy for you."

" Your love is enough gift, Mom, your caring for me everyday, in fact, it's more than enough."

"Thanks, my daughter. But you deserve another reward. Tell me, what do you want?"

"Hmmm, I'll think about it. Thank you, Mom."

When Maribel's name was called to receive her certificates of recognition, her mother accompanied her to the stage. They were so happy and all the teachers, school principal, and guest of honor congratulated them. The audience gave a resounding applause. Maribel was awarded "Writer of the Year" for her feature article that was published in the Sunday Junior Inquirer. She was the first student of the Laguna High School to get published in this one of the leading national newspapers.

"You should write more," like what your teachers said. "Oh, I think I know now what gift to give you," said Maribel's mother.

" What?"

"Secret."

"Guess-- a pen that never runs out of ink and will write forever," and Maribel broke into giggles.

"Better than that."

"I know-- a typewriter. Yes, a typewriter. Oh, Mom, I want a portable typewriter, something I can carry wherever I go. Please, Mom."

Maribel's mother wanted to buy her a personal computer, something that's Internet-ready perhaps, so she could surf the Net, so her bright, inquisitive mind will be nurtured and nourished… But Maribel's mother was not sure whether her savings would be enough.

"We'll see," she said to Maribel. I want to give the best gift to my darling daughter.

Mother and daughter went home very happy.
