Domestic violence effects everyone
by Lynn Studdard, Campus Voice Staff Writer

October was National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Gallupıs awareness was boosted on the evening of Oct. 3 when the McKinley County Domestic Violence Task Force, along with Battered Family Services, sponsored the annual March and Candlelight Vigil Against Domestic Violence. Men, women and children turned out to march from the Gallup Police Department down Route 66 to the Cultural Center.

The group carried purple balloons and signs to convey their messages. One sign showed a tearful childıs face and the slogan ³No More Tears.² Another sign depicted a tombstone and the words ³Donıt Die For Love. Rest In Peace, Mom.² The march ended with a somber candlelight vigil at the Cultural Center.

Why should people become more aware of domestic violence? According to Michele Fuller, director of Battered Family Services, ³Domestic violence is a huge problem and it doesnıt matter where you are or where you live.² Fuller believes domestic violence effects everything from rising health costs, ³a conservative estimate of four billion dollars per year,² to fear that someone you know could be at risk anytime, ³One out of three women will be physically abused at some point in their lives.²

Battered Family Services wants everyone to realize the full impact of domestic violence in this community. There were 3,614 reports of domestic violence in McKinley County last year. They believe their ³Wall of Ribbon,² located at Aztec and Strong, brings this fact clearly to light as they work to tie 3,614 purple ribbons on the fence in commemoration of each incident.

Fuller wants victims of domestic violence to know there is help. She believes New Mexico has good laws that can and do provide assistance. Twenty-four hour crisis lines are available for victims, families and friends. In the Gallup area call 505-722-7483. Outside of Gallup call 1-800-634-4508. If it is an emergency always call 911.
