ACROMANTULA

The Acromantula is a monstrous eight-eyed spider capable of human speech. It originated in Borneo, where it inhabits dense jungle. Its distinctive features include the thick black hair that covers its body; its leg span, which may reach up to fifteen feet; its pincers, which produce a distinctive clicking sound when the Acromantula is excited or angry; and a poisonous secretion. The Acromantula is carnivorous and prefers large prey. It spins dome-shaped webs upon the ground. The female is bigger than the male and may lay up to one hundred eggs at a time. Soft and white, these are large as beach balls. The young hatch in six to eight weeks. Acromantula eggs are defined as Class A Non-Tradable Goods by the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, meaning that severe penalties are attached to their importation or sale. This beast is believed to be wizard-bred, possible intended to guard wizard dwelling or treasure, as is often the case with magically created monsters.Despite its near-human intelligence, the Acromantula is untrainable and highly dangerous to wizard and Muggle alike. Rumours that a colony of Acromantula has been established in Scotland and are unconfirmed.

ASHWINDER

The Ashwinder is created when a magical fire is allowed to burn unchecked for too long. A thin, pale-grey serpent with glowing red eyes, it will rise from the embers of an unsupervised fire and slither away into the shadows of the dwelling, in which it finds itself leaving an ashy trail behind it. The Ashwinder only lives for an hour and during that time seeks a dark secluded spot in where to lay its eggs, after which collapse into dust. Ashwinder eggs are brilliant red and give off intense heat. They will ignite the dwelling whithin minutes if not found and frozen with a suitable charm. Any wizard realising that one or more Ashwinders are loose in the house must trace them immediatley and locate the nest off eggs. Once frozen, these eggs are of great value for use in love potions and may be eaten whole as a cure for ague. Ashwinders are found worldwide.

AUGUREY
A native of Britain and Ireland, the Augurey is a thin and morbid looking bird, greenish-black in color and looks something like an underfed vulture. They are extremely shy and you will mostly find their tear shaped nests in bramble and thorns. Their diet consists of large insects and fairies. They fly only in heavy rain.
The Augurey has a
distinctive low and throbbing cry which was once believed to foretell death. Wizards would avoid the nests of an Augurey for fear of hearing the cry. There have been reports of Wizards having a heart attack after accidently stumbling upon a nest and hearing that heart-wrenching wail.
Indepth research by Uric the Oddball has proven that the
Augureys' cry merely signals that rain is approaching.
This information has made the Augurey a popular weather forecaster, although most find it difficult to head the constand moaning during the winter months.
Augurey feathers are useless as quills because they repel ink.

B

BANSHEE

Banshee or 'Bean-sidhe' is Irish for fairy woman. Her sharp, cries and wails are also called 'keening'. The English word 'Keen' is from the Irish 'Caoineadh' meaning lament.

There is no harm or evil in her mere presence, unless she is seen in the act of crying; but this is a fatal sign. The wail of a banshee pierces the night, it's notes rising and falling like the waves of the sea, it always announces a mortal's death. She is solitary woman fairy, mourning and forewarning those only of the best families in Ireland, those with most ancient Celtic lineages. Those whose names begin with 'Mac/Mc' or 'O', whose origin dates from the time of the Irish heroes. The banshee loves the old mortal families with a fierce and unearthly caring.
When a member of the beloved race is dying, she paces the dark hills about his house. She sharply contrasts against the night's blackness, her white figure emerges with silver-grey hair streaming to the ground and a grey-white cloak of a cobweb texture clinging to her tall thin body. Her face is pale, her eyes red with centuries of crying. But this is not the only way that the banshee appears, at other times she is seen as a beautiful young girl, with long, red-golden hair, and wearing a green kirtle and scarlet mantle, broached with gold, after the Irish fashion. Or she will appear shrouded and muffled in a dark, mist-like cloak.

White Lady of Sorrow some people name her, and Lady of Death.
She is the Woman of Peace and the Spirit of the Air. For despite her wailing, she is somehow graced with a manner of peace.

Unseen, banshees attend the funerals of the beloved dead. Although, sometimes she can be heard wailing, her voice blending in with the mournful cries of others.

Each banshee has her own mortal family. Out of love she follows the old race across the ocean to distant lands. Her wails or keen can be heard in America and England, wherever the true Irish have settled. But they never forget their blood ties; and neither does she (Banshees don't really seem like creatures, but after all, they are magical)

BASILISK
The first recorded Basilisk was bred by Herpo the Foul, a Greek Dark Wizard and Parselmouth, who discovered after many experiments that a chicken egg that was hatched beneath a toad would produce a giant serpent that possessed extraordinaryly dangerous powers. Basilisks are a brilliant green in color and can grow up to fifty feet in length. The male Basilisk has a scarlet plume on its head.

Although they have

extremely venomous fangs the Basilisks most effective weapon is its large yellow eyes. Anyone who gazes directly into its eyes will suffer instant death.
They eat most things, all mammals, birds and even most reptiles. They live to a great a, it's rumoured that Herpo the Foul's Basilisk lived to nine hundred years.

The creation of Basilisks has been illegal since medievil times, although some Dark Wizards manage to escape

indepth investigation by the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, by simply removing the chicken egg from underneath the toad when a representitve comes by.

However, since Basilisks are uncontrollable except by Parselmouths, they are as dangerous to Most Dark Wizards as to anybody else. There have been no sightings in Britain for four hundred years.

BILLYWIG
The Billywig is an insect that originated in Australia. It is about one inch long, and is a vivid saphire blue in color. They move so fast however, that they are rarely noticed by anyone until they have been stung. The Billywig's wings are attached to the top of its head and rotate so fast that it spins as it flies. At the bottoms of it's body is a ling thin needle-like sting and those who are stung often suffer from giddiness, followed by levitation. Many Australian Witches and Wizards have attempted to catch Billywigs and provoke the into stinging, so that they may enjoy these side-effects, but too many stings can result in the victim hovering uncontrollably for days, and some severe allergic reactions can result in permanent floating.

Dried Billywig stings are used in several potions and are believed to be a component in the popular Fizzing Whizbees.

Newt Scamander
BOWTRUCKLE
A Bowtruckle is a tree guardian found in Western England, Southern Germany and certain Scandinavian Forests. They are only around 8 inches tall, and being that they are made of bark and twigs, they blend into the trees, therefore making them very difficult to see. They are peaceable creatures who eat mainly insects, but should the tree that it is living in be threatened, it will become agressive, leaping down onto the tree cutter, in an attempt to gouge out their eyes with their long sharp fingers.

This might leave you

wondering how we get the wood for our wands.

A Bowtruckle can be distracted by offering it woodlice. This will give a witch or wizard enough time to remove the small amount of wood that they need.

Newt Scamander
BUNDIMUN
Found worldwide, Bundimuns are extremely skilled at creeping under floorboards and behind skirting boards and infesting houses.

When sleeping, they resemble a patch of greenish fungus with eyes, but when

alarmed, they will scuttle away on their many legs. They are known to feed on dirt.

A Scouring Charm will rid a house of an infestation of Bumdimuns, though if they have grown out of control, you

should contact the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures (Pest Sub-Sivision) before your house collapses. Diluted Bumdimun secretion is used in some magical cleaning fluids.

C

CENTUAR

A Centuar has a mans head, torso and arms, joined to a horses body. They come in numerous colors. They are extremely intelligent and can talk, so technically they cannot be classified as a beast.

They live in the Forest and it

is thought that they originated in Greece, altho they are now found throughout Europe.

The ways of the Centuar is shrouded in mystery, and are as mistrustful of Wizarding folk as they are of Muggles.

It is said that they live in herds, ranging from ten to fifty members.

They are extremely knowledgable in magical healing, astronomy, divination, and archery.

Newt Scamander
CHIMAERA
This is a rare Greek monster, with a lion's head, a goat's body and a dragon's tail. They are vicious and blood thirsty and extremely dangerous! There is only one known instance of a successful Chimaera slaying. Sadly the wizard concerned fell from his winged horse and fell to his death soon after, exhausted from his efforts.

Chimaera eggs are classified as Class A Non-Tradeable Goods.

Newt Scamander
CHIZPURFLE
Chizpurfles are small parasites up to a twentieth of an inch high. They have fangs and resemble a crab in apperance. They are attracted by magic and may infest the fur and feathers of creatures such as Crups and Augureys. They will also enter a wizards home and attack magical objects such as wands, gradually gnawing their way through to the magical core. They are also known to settle in the bottom of cauldrons, where they will gorge upon any lingering drops of potion. In the absence of magical items, they will attack electrical objects.

Although Chizpurfles are easy to destroy with a number of

patented potions on the market, severe infestations may require the assistance of the Pest Sub-Division of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, as Chizpurfles that have been swollen with magical substances are very difficult to fight.
Newt Scamander
CLABBERT
This is a tree-dwelling creature that looks something like a monkey crossed with a frog. It originated in the southern states of America, altho it is now found worldwide. They have mottled green skin that is smooth and hairless, their hands and feet are webbed, and their arms and legs are long and supple, allowing the Clabbert to swing in between the branches of trees, as would an orangutan. They have short horns on their head and a wide mouth, which always seems to be grinning, showing a mouth full of razor-sharp teeth. They feed mostly on small lizards and birds.

The Clabberts most distinctive feature is the large pustule in the middle of its forehead. This is a warning device that turns scarlet and flashes when they sense danger. These were once

used in Wizard gardens to warn of nearing Muggles, but the International Confederation of Wizards has introduced fines which have ended this practice. The sight of a tree at night full of glowing pustules attracted too much Muggle attention, leaving them wondering why their neighbours had their Christmas lights up in June.

Newt Scamander
CRUP
The Crup originated in the southeast of England. It closely resembles a Jack Russell terrier, except it has a forked tail. The Crup is almost certainly a Wizard dog, as it is intensely loyal to Wizards and ferocious towards Muggles. It is a scavenger that eats anything from gnomes to old tyres.

Crup licences can be obtained from the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures after the completion of a simple test to prove that the applicant wizard is capable of

controlling the Crup while in the presence of Muggles. Owners are legally obliged to removed the tail with a painless severing charm when the Crups is six to eight weeks old, incase Muggles should notice it.

D

DEMENTOR

Demetors are guards at Azkaban prison. Dementors suck every happy thought out of any human. Dementors are hooded creatures that have green scaly skin, dementors only remove their hood when they perform the kiss of death.

The kiss of death is when the

Dementor sucks a persons soul out through their mouth, leaving behind and empty shell, a thing that is worse than death.

Unable to see, Dementors feel their way by feeding off of peoples emotions. Infact, if it can the Dementor will feed on you long enough to reduce

you to something resembling itself, a souless evil-being,

They are found in the darkiest and filthiest of places. Their presence is also sensed by Muggles, although they do not realise what causes their sadness.

DEMUGUISE

This creature is found in the Far East, but they are very difficult to find, as they are able to make themselves invisible if they feel threatened, and can only be seen by Wizards that are skilled in its capture.
The Demuguise is a very peaceful creature, that only eats herbs. Although they resemble an ape in appearance they are extremely graceful, with large
black doleful eyes, that is often hidden by its hair. The whole body is covered in long, fine, silky, silvery hair. Demuguise pelts are highly valued as the hair is spun into Invisibility Cloaks.
Newt Scamander

DIRICAWL

Originating in Mauritius, the Diricawl is a plump bodied, fluffy feathered flightless bird. With the ability to vanish in a puff of feathers and reappear elsewhere, they are very capable of escaping danger. An ability that is shared only by the Phoenix.
Interestly, Muggles were once fully aware of its existance, althought they called it the Dodo bird. Muggles, being unaware if the Diricawls ability to vanish, believe that they have hunted this bird into extinction. As this
seems to have raised Muggle awareness of the dangers of slaying their fellow creatures, the International Confederation of Wizards has decided that the Muggles should not be made aware of its continued existence.

DOXY

The Doxy is often mistaken as a Fairy though it is a quite diffrent species. Like the fairy, it has a minuet human form, though in the Doxy's case this is covered in thick black hair and has an extra pair of arms and legs. The Doxy's wings are thick, curved, and shiny, much like a beatles. Doxies are found through out Northern Europe and America, prefering cold climates. They lay up to 500 eggs at a time and bury them. The eggs hatch in 2 to 3 weeks. Doxies have double rows of sharp, venomouse
teeth. An antidote should be taken if bitten.

DRAGON

Probably the most famous of all magical beasts, Dragons are among the most difficult to hide. The female is generally larger and more aggressive than the male, though neither should be approached by any but highly skilled and trained Wizards. Dragon hide, blood, heart, liver and horn have highly magical properties, but Dragon eggs are defined as Class A Non-Tradeable Goods. There are ten breeds of Dragon, though these have been known to interbreed on occasion, producing rare hybrids.

DUGBOG

The Dugbog is found it the marshes of Eupore and North and South America. It looks remarkably like a piece of dead wood while sitting still, but closer examination reveals finned paws and very sharp teeth. It glides and slithers through the marhsland, feeding mostly on small mammals. Their favourite food however, is the Mandrake. Mandrake-growers have been known to seize the leaves of one of their prize plants, only to find a bloody mangled mess below owing to the attentions of a Dugbog.

Should you stumble into the marsh, you risk being attacked, resulting in severe injury to your ankles.

E

ERKLING

The Erkling is an elfish creature that originated in the Black Forest in Germany. It is larger than a gnome, around three feet high on average, with a pointed face and a high-pitched cackle that is very entrancing to children, whom it will attempt to lure away from its guardian in an attempt to eat. Strict controls by the German Ministry of Magic have reduced Erkling killings dramactically over the last few centuries. The last known Erkling attack was upon six-year-old wizard Bruno Schmidt. The Erkling was killed when Master Schmidt hit it very hard over the head with his fathers collapsible cauldron.
Newt Scamander

ERUMPENT

The Erumpent is a very large, grey colored beast, found in Africa. They have great power, and can weigh as much as a tonne. Often they are mistaken for a rhinocerios at a distance. It has a thick hide that most charms and curses bounce off of, a large sharp horn on it's nose and a long rope-like tail. They give birth to only one calf at a time. The Erumpent will not attack unless they are provoked, but in the event that it does charge, the results are catastrophic. Their horn can pierce everything from skin to metal, and contains a deadly fluid which will cause whatever is injected with it to explode.

The Erumpent numbers are not great, as males frequently

explode each other during mating season. They are treated with a tremendous amount of caution by African Wizards.

Their horns, tails and Exploding Fluid are all used in potions, though they are classified as B Tradeable Materials (Dangerous and Subject to Strict Control).

F

FAIRY

The Fairy is a small and decorative beast of little intelligance. Often used or conjured by wizards for decoration, the Fairy genrally inhabits woodlands or glades. Ranging in height from 1 to 5 inches, the Fairy has a minute humanoid body, head, and limbs but sports large insect-like wings, which may be transparent or muti-colored, according to type.
The Fairy posses a weak brand of magic that it may use to deater predators, such as the Augurey. It has a quarrelsome nature but, being excessively vain, it will become docile on any occasion when it is called to act as an ornament. Despite its human like apperence, the Fairy cannot speak. It makes a high-pitched buzzing noise
to communicate with its fellows.
The Fairy lays up to 50 eggs at a time on the underside of
leaves. The eggs hatch into brightly colored larvae. At the egg of 6 to 10 days they spin themselves a cocoon, from which they emerge 1 month later as fully formed winged adults.

FIRE CRAB

With a misleading name such as Fire Crab, this Fiji native resembles a tortoise with a heavily jewelled shell.

Fire Crabs live in a protected stretch of beach, safe from Muggles who wish

to get its shell for the jewels, and from unscrupulous Wizards who use the shells are highly prized cauldrons. Although it's highly protected, the Fire Crab has its own higly effective defence mechanism. It shoots flames from its rear end when it's attacked.

Fire Crabs are exported as pets, but a special licence needs to be obtained.

FLOBBERWORM

The Flobberworm is found in damp ditches. Thick and brown in appearance, they can reach up to ten inches in length. They move very little. One end is indistinguishable from the other, both producing mucus from which the name is derived, and is sometimes used to thicken potions.
The Flobberworms preferred food is lettuce, but it will eat almost any kind of vegetation.
Newt Scamander

FWOOPER

The Fwooper is an African bird with very vivid plumage. They can be orange, pink, lime green and even yellow. The Fwooper has been a provider of fancy quills for many, many years. They also lay brilliantly patterned eggs.
Although they're enjoyable at
first, the Fwooper's songs will eventually drive a person to insanity. This was proved when Uric the Oddball tried an experiment to prove the the Fwoopers song was beneficial to the health, and listened to it for three months without break. He showed up to a meeting wearing only a toupee, which on closer inspection turned out to be a dead badger. Based on this evidence, the Fwooper is sold with a Silencing Charm on it, which needs monthly reinforcement. A licence must be obatined to own one of these birds, as they require special care.

G

GHOUL

Although ugly, the Gnome is not a dangerous creature. It looks somewhat like a slimy, buck-toothed ogre, and generally resides in Wizards' attics or barns and eats spiders and moths. It moans occasionally and throws objects around, but is simple minded and at worst will growl alarmingly at anyone who stumbles across it. A Ghoul Task Force exists at the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures to remove ghouls from dwellings that have been sold to Muggles, but in Wizard families the Ghoul often becomes a talking point, or even a pet.

GLUMBUMBLE

The Glumbumble from Northern Europe, is a furry grey flying insect that produces a melancholy-inducing treacle, which is used as an antidote to the hysteria that is produces by eating Alihotsy leaves. It has been known to infest beehives, with disasterous effects on the honey.
Glumbumbles nest in dark
and secluded places such as hollow trees and caves. They feed on nettles.

GNOME

The Gnome is a common garden pest, found all through Northern Europe and North America. It can reach a foot in height, and has an unusually large head, and hard bony feet. The gnome is easily dispelled from the garden by swinging it in circles until they become dizzy and then dropping the over the garden wall. Alternatively, a Jarvey can be used, though many Wizards find this method of gnome-control too brutal.

Newt Scamander

GRAPHORN

Found in the mountain regions of Europe, the Graphorn is large and greyish-purple in color with a humped back. They have two very long sharp horns and walk on large, four-thumbed feet. They have an extremely aggressive nature.

On occasion you might see a Mountain Troll mounted on Graphorns, although the Graphorn do not take kindly to attempts to tame them, and it is more likely that you will see a Troll coveered in Graphorn scars.
Powdered Graphorn horn is
used in many potions, though it is extremely expensive, due to the difficulty in collecting it. Graphorm hide is even tougher than a dragon's and repels most spells.

GRIFFIN

The Griffin originated in Greece and has the front legs and head of a giant Eagle, but the body and hind legs of a Lion. Like a Sphinx, Griffin's are often employed by Wizards to guard treasure.

Griffins feed on raw meat.

GRINDYLOW

A horned, pale-green water demon, the Grindylow is found in lake throughout Britain and Ireland. HIPPOCAMPUS

Originating in Greece, the Hippocampus has the head and forequarters of a horse, and the tail and hindquarters of a giant fish. Although this species is usually found in the Mediterranean, a superb blue roan speciment was caught by some merpeople off the shores of Scotland in 1949, and subsequently domesticated by them. The Hippocampus lays lrage, semi-transparent eggs through which the Tadfoal may be seen.

HORKLUMP

Originally from Scandinavia, the Horklump is now widespread through Northern Europe. It resembles a fleshy pinkish mushroom, covered in sparce wiry black bristles. A prodigious breeder, the Horklump will cover an average garden in a matter of days. It speads sinewy tentacles rather than roots into the ground to search for earthworms, its preferred food. The Horklump is a delicacy of Gnomes, but other than that, it has no discernable use.
Newt Scamander

I

IMP

The Imp, found only in Britain and Ireland, is often confused with the Pixie. They are both between six to eight inches high, and both have the same slapstick sense of humour. The Imp however, cannot fly, nor is it as vividly colored (they are usually dark brown or black).

It's preferred terrain is damp and marshy areas, usually around river banks, where it will amuse itself by pushy and tripping unwary people.

Imps eat small insects and have breeding habits similar to the Fairies, though Imps do not spin cocoons. The young are hatched fully formed at around one inch high.
Newt Scamander

J

JARVEY

The Jarvey is found in Britain, Ireland and North America. It looks remarkably similar to and overgrown ferret, the major difference however, is that the Jarvey can talk. True conversation however is beyond the wit of the Jarvey, which tends to confine itself to short and often rude phrases in an almost constant stream.

Jarveys live mostly below ground, where they pursue gnomes, although they will also eat moles, rats, and voles.

JOBBERKNOLL

The Jobberknoll from Northern Europe and America, is a tiny blue speckled bird that which eats small insects. It makes no sound until the moment of it's death, at which point it lets out a long scream made up of every sound it has ever heard, regurgitated backwards. Jobberknoll feathers are used in Truth Serums and Memory Potions.

K

KAPPA

Kappas are Japanese water demons that inhabit shallow ponds and rivers. They are said to resemble a monkey with fish scales instead of fur. It has a hollow in the top of its head in which it carries water. The Kappa feeds on human blood, but can be persuaded not to harm a person if it is thrown a cucumber with that persons named carved into it. If you should meet a Kappa, you should trick it into bowing, if it does, the water in the hollow of its head will run out, draining the Kappa of its strength.

Newt Scamander

KELPIE

This water demon, which is found in British and Irish waters, can take on a number of different shapes, though most often it will appear as a horse, with bulrushes for a mane. Having lured an unwary person onto its back, it will dive straight to the bottom of the water, and devour the rider. The correct way to overcome a Kelpie is to get a bridle over it's head with a Placement Charm, which renders it docile and unthreatening.

The world largest Kelpie is found in Loch Ness, Scotland. It's favourite form is that of a Sea Serpent. International

Confederation of Wizard observers realised that they were not dealing with a true Sea Serpent when they saw it turn into an otter on the approach of a team of Muggle investigators, and then transform back into a Sea Serpent when the coast was clear.

KNARL

From Northern Europe and America, the Knarl is usually mistaken for a hedgehog by Muggles. The two species are indeed indistinguishable except for one important difference in their behaviour: If food is left out in the garden for a hedgehog, it will accept and enjoy the gift, however, if food is offered to a Knarl in the same fashion, the Knarl will only assume that the householder is trying to lure it and trap it, and will savage the householders garden plants and ornaments. Many Muggle children have been accused of vandalism when an offended Knarl was the real culprit.

KNEAZLE

The Kneazle was originally bred in Britain, though it is now exported worldwide. A small catlike creature with plecked, speckled, or spotted fur, outside ears, and a tail like a lion's, the Kneazle is intelligent, independent, and ocasionally aggressive, though if it takes a liking to a witch or wizard, it makes an excellent pet. The Kneazle has an uncanny ability to detect unsavoury or suspicious characters and can be relied upon to guide it's owner safely home if they are lost. Kneazle have up to eight kittens in a litter and can interbreed with cats. Licences are required for ownership as (like Crups and Fwoopers) Kneazle are sufficiently unusual in appearance to attrace Muggle interest.

LEPRECHAUN

Also known as Clauricorn, the Leprechaun is more intelligent than a Fairy, and less malicious than the Imp, the Pixie and the Doxy. They are nevertheless still mischievous. Found only in Ireland, they usually grow to a height of six inches, and is green in color. It has been known to create its clothing from leaves. Although L

eprechauns can speak, they have never requested reclassification as "beings". The Leprechaun bears live young, and are mostly found in forest and woodland areas. Even so, they do enjoy attracting Muggle attention and therefore feature in Muggle literature for children almost as much as the Fairy.
Leprechauns produce a

realistic gold-like substance that vanishes after a few hours, to their great amusement. Leprechauns eat leaves and despite their reputation as pranksters, are not known to have evern done lasting damage to a human.

LETHIFOLD

Mercifully, the Lethifold is a rare creature, found only in tropical climates. It resembles a black cloak, around half an inch thick, (thicker if it has recently killed and digested a victim). which glides along the ground at night. The earliest account we have of the Lethifold was written by the Wizard Flavuis Belby, who was lucky enough to survive a Lethifold attack in 1782 while vacationing in Papa New Guinea.

You can read his account of it in Encounters With Very Dangerous Creatures.

As Belby so dramatically reveals, the Patronus is the only spell known to repel the

Lethifold. However, as it generally attacks the sleeping, its victims rarely have a chance to use any magic against it. Once its prey has been successfully suffocated, it will digest its food right there in the victims bed. It then leaves the house, slightly thicker than before, leaving no trace of itself or the victim behind.

LOBALUG

The Lobalug is found at the bottom on the North Sea. It is a simple creature, ten inches ling, comprising of a rubbery spout and a venom sac. MACKLED MALACLAW

The Macalaw is a land-dwelling creature that is found mostly on rocky coastlines around Europe. Despite its passing resemblance to Lobsters, it should never be eaten, as its flesh is unfit for human consumption, which will result in a high fever and an ugly green rash.

The Macalaw can grow to a length of twelve inches, and is a light grey color, with deep-green spots. It eats small crustaceans and will attempt to tackle prey that is bigger than itself. The Macalaw's bite has an odd side effect,

making the victim extremely unlucky for around a week after the injury. If you are bitten by a Macalaw, all bets, wagers and speculative ventures should be cancelled, as they are sure to go against the victim.

MANTICORE

The Manticore is a highly dangerous Greek beast with the head of a man, the body of the Lion and the tail of a

Manticore skin repels almost all known charms, and the sting causes instant death.

MERPEOPLE

Also known as Sirens, Selkies and Merrows, Merpeople exist throughout the world. They vary in apperance almost as much as humans do. Their habits and customs remain as mysterious as those of the Centuar, though those Wizards who have mastered the language of Mermish, speak of highly organised communities, varying in size according to habitat, and some have elaborately contructed dwellings. Like the Centuars, the Merpeople have declined "being" status in favour of a "beast" classification.

The oldes recorded Merpeople were known to as Sirens, and it is in warmer

waters that we find the beautiful Mermaids so frequently depicted in Muggle literature and paintings. The Selkies of Scotland and the Merrows of Ireland are less beautiful, but they share that love of music which is common to all Merpeople.

MOKE

The Moke is a silver-green lizard reaching up to ten inches in length, and is found right through Britain and Ireland. It has the ability to shrink at will and therefore has never been noticed by Muggles.

Moke skin is highly prized among wizards for use as moneybags, and purses, as

the scaly material will contract at the approach of a stranger, just as the Moke does. Moke-skin moneybags are therefore very difficult for theives to locate.

MOONCALF

The Mooncalf is an incredibly shy creature that emerges from their burrows, found worldwide, only at the full moon. It's body is smooth and pale grey, it has bulging round eyes on top of its head, and four spindly legs with enormous flat feet. Mooncalves perform

complicated dances on their hind legs in isolated area in the moonlight. These are believed to be a prelude to mating, and often leave intricate geometric patterns behind in wheat field, to the great puzzlement of Muggles. Watching Mooncalves dance by moonlight is a fascinating

experience, and often profiable, for is their silvery dung is collected before the sun rises and spread on magical herbs and flower beds, the plants will grow very fast and become extremely strong.

MURTLAP

Q

QUINTAPED

The Quintaped, also known as Hairy MacBoon, is a highly dangerous carnivorous beart with a particular liking for humans. Its low-slung body is covered with thick reddish-brown hair as are its five legs, each of which ends in a clubfoot. The Quintaped is founf only upon the Isle of Drear off the northernmost tip of Scotland. Drear has been made unplottable for this reason.

Legend has it that the Isle of Drear was once populated by two Wizarding families, the McCliverts and the MacBoons. A drunken Wizarding duel between Dugald, chief of the clan McClivert, and Quintius, head of the clan MacBoon, is supposed to have led to the

death of Dugald. In retaliation, a gang of McCliverts surrounded the MacBoon dwellings one night and Transfigured each and every MacBoon into a monstrous five legged creature. The McCliverts realised too late that the Transfigured MacBoons were infinately more dangerous in this state (the MacBoons had a reputation for great ineptitude at magic). To make matters worse, the MacBoons resisted every attempt to turn then back into human form. The monsters killed all of the McCliverts until no human remained on the island. It was only the that the MacBoon monsters reaslised that in the absence of anyone to wield a wand, they would be forced to remain as monsters forever.

Whether this tale is true or not will never be known. Certainly there are no surviving McCliverts or MacBoons to tell us what happened to their ancestors. The Quintapeds cannot talk and have strenuously resisted every attempt by the Department for the Regulations and Control of Magical Creatures to capture a specimen and try to untransfigure it, so we must assume that if they are indeed, as their nickname suggests, Hairy MacBoons, they are quite happy to live out their days as beats.

RUNESPOOR

Originating in the small African country of Burkina Faso, this three headed serpent commonly reaches a length of six or seven feet. Livid orange with black stripes, the Runespoor is only too easy to spot, so the Ministry of Magic in Burkina Faso has designated certain forests unplottable for the Runespoor's sole use.

The Runespoor, though not in itself a particularly vicious beast, was once a favourite pet of Dark Wizards, no doubt because of its striking apperance. It is to the writings of Parselmouths who have kept and conversed

with these serpents that we owe our understanding of their curious habits. It transpires from the records that each of the Runespoor's heads serves a different purpose. The left head (as seen by the Wizard facing the Runespoor) is the planner. It decides where the Runespoor is to go and what it is to do next. The middle head is the dreamer (Runespoors may remian stationary for days at a time, lost in glorious visions and imaginings). The right head is the critic and will evaluate the efforts of the left and middle heads with a continual irritable hissing. The right head's fangs are extremely venomous. The Runespoor rarely reaches a great age, as the heads tend to attack each other. It is common to see a Runespoor with the right head missing, the other two have banded together to bite it off.

The Runespoor produces eggs through the mouths, the only known magical beast to do so. These eggs are of immense value in the production of potions to stimulate mental agility. A black market in Runespoor eggs and in the serpents themselves has flourished for several centuries.

WEREWOLF

Found worldwide, it is believed that the werewolf originated in Northern Europe. Humans only turn into a werewolf if they have been bitten by one.

Until recently there was no cure for this unfortunate predicament, and while we are still unable to fully cure a

person that has been bitten, there has been a potion developed that greatly alleviates the worst symptoms. While the person will still transform on the full moon, they keep a rational mind. Should a person forget to take their potion around the full moon, they will turn into a murderous beast.

Both Wizards and Muggles can be infected by a werewolf bite.

Unlike other magical creatures, the werewolf actively hunt humans in preference to any other kind pf prey.
