Basic Face

To determine your skin type, do the tissue test:

  •  Wash your face.

  •  Wait 15 minutes, then blot your face with a tissue or oil-blotting paper.

If the tissue has oily spots on it, you have oily skin.

If the tissue only picks up oil after it is pressed to the T-zone area

(forehead, nose, and chin), you have combination skin.

If you have very few blotches on the tissue, you have normal skin.

If the tissue is completely free of blotches, you have dry skin.

Dry Skin

Dry skin is characterized by very small pores. Prone to flakiness, dry skin can also be sensitive.

Oily Skin

Large pores, especially on the nose, forehead, or even on the back and chest, are one of the primary characteristics of oily skin. Oily skin is caused by increased secretion from the sebaceous (oil-producing) glands in the hair follicles. Oil glands are controlled by hormones, which is one of the reasons that birth-control pills are useful in controlling acne.

Combination Skin

A lot of people fall into this category, which essentially means that you have an oily T-zone and dry cheeks. With this skin type, where you apply skin-care products is as important as what type you use.
