Something About Me

Some of you, having visited my site for many long months, might be asking yourselves "Who is this girl? Why has she made this web page? Where does she live, so I can ask her out?" (Okay, so I can wish...)

Mundanely, my name is Julie, and I live in the shire of L'Ile du Dragon Dormant (The Island of the Sleeping Dragon), in the Northern Shores region of the East Kingdom. This place is also sometimes called Montreal, Canada. I am a university student, double-majoring in history and liberal arts. I live at home with my mom and don't work during the semester, so my budget is a little tight.

I've been involved with the SCA for nearly seven years (wow... it really doesn't seem that long!), and I've had to find creative ways of stretching my SCA budget for most of that time. I decided that there must be other people out there, like me, who either are looking for ways to enjoy their hobby cheaply, or have their own tips to submit. So, in a burst of obsessive creative activity, I created this web page. I would also like to thank everyone who has submitted tips over the months. This page would be much less useful without you!

My favorite activities in the SCA are bardic (singing and storytelling), sewing, and embroidery. I have also tried my hand at heddle-weaving, spinning, and archery, and various other arts and sciences. I have a wonderful group of Scadian friends who put up with my singing every week at practice, and even pretend to enjoy it. *grin*

My persona is Lady Katherine Ashewode, and Anglo-Norman from 12th century England. She lived in Gloucester, but her father was a minor noble from Micheldean, about ten miles west of Gloucester, on the border of Wales. As a second daughter, she didn't have very promising marriage prospects, and eventually married a third son of a Gloucester nobleman. Together, she and her lord went on Crusade, where she learned many stories and songs from people on her travels. On the way home, however, she was shipwrecked on the shores of the Island of the Sleeping Dragon, and has resided in the East Kingdom ever since. (Note that the lord in this story is completely fictional. I have no lord at the present.)

For those of you who haven't asked, here's a picture of me. It was taken at our Baronial Invesiture on March 5, 2005 (AS XXXIX). The man in the picture is Master Ernst Nuss von Kitzingen, man of many titles, aka: Da Coach, head of my household. If he looks like a fun guy, it's because he is.
