TALKING ABOUT SEX The Annexe is an initiative of The Ballarat Community Health Centre, providing a confidential and free service with information regarding sexual health issues. A doctor is available to discuss your problems with i.e. Family planning and STD's (Sexually Transmitted Diseases). The Annexe also goes out to schools to educate students in areas of family planning, sexual behaviour and assertiveness regarding the use of condoms. Jenny Morrison from the Annexe said that one of the benefits of going out to the schools is to put a face to the service, and to teach students that there are real people out there that will listen. Also that the Annex staff are not just voices over the phone. The Annexe can also clarify information for people that may have been given to them by friends which may have contained conflicting information. They can also provide up-to-date figures on sexual health issues. Drugs and alcohol can cloud judgement of an individual which in turn may lead to problems sexually (eg. Unsafe sex and unexpected pregnancy). Jenny also said that communication from parents, family and friends is crucial to helping young people break barriers in their lives. She also said that the Annexe's central location in Sturt Street encourages people to make contact with them to help sort out their problems. The media sometimes play good and bad roles in our lives, but for community awareness it has been a widely used tool for sexual health. The Annexe is open: Monday 1pm to 5pm Location: 710 Sturt Street Phone: 5333 1635 Nick Pollock |
