andyy - 05/11/00 21:21:49 College: SunyB Alumni-Class 91 | Comments: My fellow Binghamtonites, I am an Asian-American who attended Binghamton in 87-91. Heres one experience I had with the ULED Binghamton University Police that I would like to share with you. At the time, I was dorming over at O'Connor Hall. One evening, I drove my car up the walkway to the dorm entrance. I didnt think much of this since I have seen other residents driven and parked their cars like this during a move. While I was pulling up to the entrance a ULED patrol car pulled up behind me. A husky female ULED officer got out and asked for my University ID. She asked me why I am driving up the walkway. I told her that I am moving and it would be just a minute. She then said for me to get my car out of the walkway or she'll give me a ticket. She then asked if I would drive my car like this in my country. At that moment, I was offended. What did she mean by that. Is it that I am non-white that she thought I must had come from another country. Fearing for a ticket, I didnt respond to the comment and drove off. I now regret I didnt file a complaint to the University office. I am glad all you Binghamtonites are making an issue out this lastest Anti-Asian attack. You feel much better later on in life. |

- 05/06/00 19:42:50 College: SUNY-B | Comments: I am completely against racism and I believe that the assailants in the fight a few weeks back should all be expelled. However, the extent that the ASU and other organizations on campus have taken this incident to is unbelievable. The assailants have be n dealt with. No other students on campus were involved and it is unfair to subject every student on this campus to weeks of endless rallies, where no clear point is stated. The administration cannot publicly announce anything until it thoroughly review the situation. That is called "innocent until proven guilty". I don't think two weeks is a long time to delay giving a press release. They cannot release anything until all the facts are straight -- and they still aren't. The fact is that most studen s on campus, including myself, are open-minded individuals, with friends of all races and religions. It is a shame that some people on your website have portrayed all white people as losers. This is called racism and it is just as bad as any white man s ying something negative about an Asian man. It is unfortunate that campus organizations have divided the campus along racial lines this semester while trying to bring everyone together. I hope that we can move on and everything will calm down over the s mmer. |

I totally agree with you, I was the only asian wrestler out of 35 teammates in a 40% asian student populated high school! and throughout my high school career I've only wrestled 2 asian guys in two local tournaments, in the state level there wasn't any asian wrestler. This country is ruled by sports, and us asians whom are typically smart asses in classroom aren't so sports-smart. First off, though, while I can understand the amount of anger that is, or may have been around... some of us need to calm down. Indeed, in first reading of the incident o er in New York, I was furious. And I won't lay claim in being a kind of collected individual, but I'm trying. I think it's awesome what you guys are doing, as an organization. I think it IS time some of the people realized that the "passive Asian" stereotype is just that - a STEREOTYPE. I believe you all have been instrumental in bringing that to light, nd I - as a fellow Asian-American - am very grateful. I, too, have in my mere 20 years of existence have attempted to nullify some stereotypes, but there's only so much one person can do. Though, I do admit, sometimes I did make fun of my own people... P But there's an appropriate time for everything - this being the appropriate time to be serious. I commend all of your efforts thus far and your continuous efforts! I hope, though, that people don't result to violence to make the point. As we sho ld have learned from this experience, violence solves nothing. There is something definitely to be learned from history and its leaders - ranging from Gandhi, MLK, Malcom X to Mao, Kim, all the way to Hitler. In any case of good or bad intentions, there are things to be learned from all their actions and writings. This may sound rather trivial, but it is with hope that you will do some of the necessary research and reading prior to taking actions - which I'm more than certain you do. If by any way I can help from down here in Atlanta, I'd be more than happy to. If things go right, I may be moving up there for graduate school. I'd love to be of help then, as well... to further your cause. EDUCATE... it's the best we can do... INFORM (that's redundant) but it's part of getting the word out. But in doing all of this, it's always important to TAKE ACTION which all of you have... though in anger, with peaceful intentions, I believe, and THAT is a mark of a great ind vidual and a great group of individuals. I commend all of you for your recent deeds, especially, and the deeds of your past - of all ASUs,CSUs,ASAs,JSAs,VSAs,etc.,etc., and their works included. There is much, yet, to be learned... and much to be done. Good luck. And Thank You all for all that you do for our community. Your Brother, Taku R. Nishi |
Clairey - 04/14/00 20:52:17 My Email:helen.gratil@undp.org | Comments: Violence, racism, gang assaults have become commonplace in America and even beyond. So, reading about what happened to students from SUNY should elicit the same kind of emotional reaction from me as other stories I have read. I guess it's fair to say tha identifying myself as asian has helped elicit a much stronger reaction from me than any other similar stories. And based on the article on AA alone, one can't help but feel flabbergasted about the whole situation. My initial gut feeling was "Wow, that' really fucked up!" Reading the comments about the article leaves me ambivalent. Coz here I am feeling some sort of resentment against those kids and I read all these equivalent hate messages from fellow asians towards "white" people? Hmm. Is it fair to say that prejudice exists in both sides? Of course. In fact, everyone has their prejudice and when you act upon that prejudice against a particular race it's called racial discrimination. What do we do? Do we take arms and say hey look your stereotypes of Asians are wrong (i.e. asians are weak and submissive). And what would that accomplish again? Does anyone in their right minds really think that an act of violence would change people's stereotypes? Hmm. I may be taking more than what I can digest ere but let me give this a shot. A part of me appreciates the Asian effort to bring justice to what happened to these students. But, like what I said this is all on the premise that what I read on AA is the complete truth on what happened. Here is the t uth that we know of our society irrespective of what happened. Gang is a trend indicative of our times and youth. You have gangs in all kinds of colors, Asians included. I personally know people who were involved in gangs and actually did heinous crime . Does that take away the perception of Asians as weaklings? I doubt it. What it does is add to the sad statistics of faulty upbringing. And here we are on square one. Here's another truth, in many Asian cultures, if not all, women are cultivated to be submissive to their fathers and husbands. This is not the case in Western culture. In fact, women are taught that we are equal to men. So, when my boyfriend's friends dismiss me as submissive because I do his laundry and I do his dishes, I smile. Becaus you know something I'm okay being me, Asian and all. And if doing household chores stigmatizes me as "submissive" then heck I'll say "Im damn submissive." Asian children are raised to respect their elders. Asian children are taught to keep their mouth sh t and not be confrontational. Asian children are raised to be pacifist consciously or not. I may be wrong but as Asian American I know this to be true. And you know something, my western friends can call it whatever they want for all I care. When they act on their prejudice then we have issue. It's not a racist issue but a humanity issue. This is under my firm belief that people should not be treated according to race but according to righteousness that any human being is entitled to. My anger is no directed to white people but the violent act. Stop making this a racial issue. And you're perpetuating this "racial" problem when you raise your Asian rights. No. You're a human being more than any thing else and that reason should suffice for equal o purtunity for justice. It's a shame to read hte comments of "thugs" or tough "AzN". When you act and talk the way you do I can not blame people for having a negative perspective towards your kind. The wanna be tough Asian kind. Strength comes not from he number of bodies you can injure or number of people you threaten but how do you explain that to young kids who are misled to believe that there is a good reason to prove to anyone their worth. How do you make a child believe that worth is something in rinsic? Perhaps if we could gt that message accross then the utopian dream can be realized? But who are we kidding? I, for one, is a firm believer in the power of education. If we can teach children or anyone for that matter the ability to rise about peo le's personall issues, perhaps we can abolish this thing we call bullshit. As far as I am concerned, the genetic component of a "white" population is not the problem. It is the upbringing and lack of education. So when we address these issues I hope tha we don't trip on the "victim" syndrome because when you do you admit defeat. To believe that asians are worth the respect they are not getting is enough but you must live it. And if you're a "thug" who is willing the cut the throat of the closest intim dating red neck, I guess you're in good company. What I'm trying to say is Asian or White or Black..if you behave inappropriately then you must be punished and corrected by the law or whatever means we have. To deny that your race is incapable of doing he same heineuos crimes or acts of prejudice is being dellusional. Like what I said, we all have prejudices. Accept that. Deal with that. But the act of one does not excuse your own. |

Although racism will not vanish any time soon, these protests at your university will help raise the awareness of his serious racism problem in our society. If these events can circumvent these similar incidents in the future than you guys will have accomplish a lot for this society and I thank you. I don't live in the U.S. but I truly support you guys in resolving your quest to resolving this problem because RACISM is not your problem, it's everyone's problem! Thanks... PEACE and LOVE to y'all! |
Viruss - 04/12/00 00:29:51 My Email:bg25100@binghamton.edu College: Binghamton U. | Comments: I found this link thru AsianAvenue...I was there at the Open Forum and Student Rally on campus. I'm here to show my support and to thank the BASU officers for representing the Asian population, not just within SUNY campus, in this fight. Every day since became aware of the brutal incident, I wonder if the victim's condition has improved or gotten worse. These korean students weren't just at the wrong place at the wrong time. They came here for a higher education to face positive challenges and not fat l ones. Victims could just as well be either Asian males or females, and even if I don't fit the stereotype of being quiet and passive in face of confrontation, it affects me no lesser because my yellow skin defines me as the typical Asian female, making me vulnerable to ANY criminal attacks. You guys are really making a difference in spreading asian awareness, and shaping the views of Administration towards our people. |

Tigerminh - 04/11/00 21:50:30 My Email:katanaofthetiger@aol.com College: None | Comments: I'm a 100% Vietnamese and proud of my country and my asian heritage. I've travels to lots of places and has encounter many situations that would let me to believe that my life is in danger. To me RACISM will never going to go away. I'm the type of pers n that I will give you the RESPECT and you will RESPECT me in return. But there are those whose does not respect us (any non-white people), and I understand that. If you don't like me for who I am....FINE, but you still have to respect me as a person. I do know those students feel. Slurring words are bad enough, but got the nerve to even to go to the extreme and attack them...that is beyond belief. One thing that I do know, is those white students will never get the maximum penalty. They probably ge slap on the wrist, and the society will accept that because they attack those of us call Asian. Now if they attack the other students that are white, hell the community will probably call for the Death Penalty...but since it was asian, lesser penalty or even nothing will happens to them, they'll probably graduated from school and moving on like nothing happens. I say that you all should ban together and quite that school and move to another school. It take the school administrators to initiate action b cause it was too well publicize. Shame! Shame! Shame. |
Shorty - 04/11/00 20:40:46 My Email:onsoung@bcc.ctc.edu College: Bellevue Community College | Comments: I heard about those Asians ( Koreans ) who were assaulted by some "Nazi" wrestlers at the college. It is sad that we can't be the dominate group in this society. We Asians should watch our backs and defend our own kind. Those White folks and other races re jealous of Asian success and power. They will do whatever to bring us down. We should fight back with a bigger stick. Asians are a minority in the United States. Our numbers are so small and few. HOw can we ever protect ourselves from Nazi people like that?? Asians should stick together and watch your back at all times. White folks,Mexicans, and Black people are our competitors in the game of life. They will stab you in the back when they get the chance.. Be careful out there my fellow Asians brothers and sisters!!! |

Not timid - 04/02/00 20:03:20 College: SUNY-Binghamton | Comments: Please get rid of that silly Bearcats logo from the ASU website. Lois DeFleur and her cronies are trying to bury the Hate Crimes incident on campus because it casts a dubious light on their efforts to get Division I on campus ASAP. Don't forget that Riche ti, the guy who attacked John Lee and the same person who has an FBI file for beating up an African American person, received a Division I scholarship worth about $9,000 a year (more than what a teaching assistant at the university revceives in wages). |

You are all in my prayers as you move forward. I pray that your campus will be united against bigotry and that everyone will feel safe and respected. Go |
