Blues Roots

The Blues is the simplest jazz form, a 12 bars based structure, where the soloist can easily express all his feelings and emotions. If the soloist is Gerry Mulligan and the backing band is the Dave Brubeck Trio results can be very impressive. These two masters tried, during the recording of this work, to return back to their "blues roots", the common roots of every jazz player. Both Gerry and Dave's solos are backed and, sometimes, quite "interrupted" by spontaneous counterpoints of the other one. A strange album, so normal and traditional to sound a little bit odd....odd like the honky tonk piano Brubeck plays in the last track...Blues Roots.

Also spracht Dave Brubeck a proposito del Blues, la più semplice tra le forme che può assumere il jazz, basata su una struttura di 12 misure sulle quali il solista può sbizzarrirsi e trasmettere le sue emozione con grande libertà. Se poi il solista si chiama Gerry Mulligan e la band è il trio di Dave Brubeck il risultato diventa veramente interessante. Questi due "mostri sacri" in quest'opera cercano di ritornare alle loro radici improntate al blues, terreno di partenza comune a tutti i jazzisti. Sia i soli di Gerry che quelli di Dave sono a volte supportati e inframmezzati dal contrappunto spontaneo che nasce fra questi titani del jazz. Un album strano, talmente classico e tradizionale da suonare strano...strano come l'honky tonk che suona Brubeck nell'ultima traccia...Blues Roots....le radici Blues.
