Free For All
Among all Blakey's Jazz Messenger's printed records, "Free for All" reassume the whole spirit and philosophy of this historical combo: faster-louder tunes, will to swing, desire to scream from the top of your lungs. We're talking about 1964 and this is the last session of the sextet with Curtis Fuller playing the trombone. The other muscians are Freddie Hubbard and Wayne Shorter accompained by Cedar Walton on piano, Reggie Workman on bass: all this under the leadership of the great drummer. In the first tune of the set, the title track, Blakey work a lot on polirhythmy, trying to get all the soloist "lost in time". Shorter's solo, probably one of the best ever recorded by him, is a desperate man's howl. This song has enough energy and rage to exceed all other Messenger's works. On all 4 tracks the drummer beat the drums with so much fury and soloist are forced to blow against the "percussion wall" sometimes with not so conving results (Fuller solo in title-track is quite boring and lack of ideas) but always with a lot of intensity. Tra i tanti dischi pubblicati da Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, "Free For All" riassume in modo esemplare lo spirito e la filosofia di questo storico gruppo: pezzi tiratissimi, voglia di suonare, di dire qualcosa, o meglio, di gridarlo con tutte le forze, energia che trasuda da ogni nota. Siamo nel 1964 e questa é l'ultima registrazione del sestetto con Curtis Fuller al trombone. Al suo fianco vi sono Freddie Hubbard e Wayne Shorter accompagnati da Cedar Walton al piano, Reggie Workman al contrabasso, il tutto sotto la guida del leader-batterista. Il brano iniziale, che dá il titolo al disco, vede un grande lavoro poliritmico di Blakey, che fa di tutto per "buttar fuori" i solisti. Il solo di Shorter, uno dei migliori da lui registrati, arriva rabbioso come il grido di un uomo disperato. La carica di energia di questo brano supera facilmente qualsiasi cosa abbiate ascoltato dei Messengers. Durante i quattro brani del disco il batterista "picchia" come un forsennato e i solisti cercano di farsi sentire sopra il muro percussivo, in certi casi con dubbi risultati (il solo di Curtis Fuller nella title-track é piuttosto monotono e privo di idee), ma sempre con un'intensitá e una voglia di suonare come se fosse l'ultima volta. Indispensabile.
