Giant Steps

Let's go deep into Jazz history with this 1959 release. First of Coltrane's works on Atlantic, Giant Steps can be considered the incipit of John Coltrane as we know him. A full round improviser, stretching on 7 tunes penned by Him (the capital letter is a must) and destined to become immortal standards. The title track is a real example of fast and super-challenging chords and scales changing, quite impossible for whom who aren't John C. Other song have echoes of Miles Davis's tunes, like the fast Countdown (a very fast theme on changes very similar to Tune Up's) or are played on the classic 12 bar minor blues scheme (like Mr. PC). In this album there is also a track with Coltrane backed by different piano and drums players (the same rhythm section of Kind of Blue)...it's the superb ballad NAIMA, dedicated to the saxophonist's first wife: this tune is an amazing love song, where the author shows the "gentle and reflective" side of his playing. This is a great album, now available also in CD remastered editions with some alternate tracks and rehearsal done with other musicians.

Il primo album di Coltrane su etichetta Atlantic, Giant Steps può essere visto come l'incipit del John Coltrane che conosciamo oggi. Un improvvisatore a tutto tondo che si cimenta in 7 brani composti da Lui stesso (la maiuscola, signori, è d'obbligo) e destinati ad entrare fra gli standards immortali. La traccia che dà il nome all'album è un esempio di cambi di scala rapidi e molto impegnativi, pressochè impossibili per chi non è John C. Altri brani presentano sonorità che riecheggiano Miles Davis (come la velocissima Countdown, che altro non è che una riarmonizzazione intricatissima ed esasperata di Tune Up) o si riallacciano alla struttura classica del blues minore in 12 battute (come Mr. PC). Possiamo anche trovare una traccia in cui 'Trane è accompagnato da una differente sezione ritmica (la stessa di Kind of Blue)...è la stupefacente ballad NAIMA, dedicata alla prima moglie di Coltrane, ove l'autore riesce ad aprirci il lato più "calmo e riflessivo" della sua arte. Un grande album, ora disponibile anche in riedizioni rimasterizzate con diverse alternate tracks e provini di questi brani suonati con altri musicisti.
