Everyone looking at the cover of this album will notice the presence of two men with two trombones in their hands. Pretty strange for all those listeners who have always considered the trombone an awkward instrument, way far from the possibility of leading a session. This album is dedicated to this kind of distracted audience. Yet from the first track we can hear how the trombone can sound light and happy in the exposition of the head of "This could be the start of something big", showing all his round but hard-swinging timbre. Other highlights came from the classical Monk's anthem "Blue Monk": after a piano introduction both horns start the chromatical theme in harmony on the first chorus, then they start to play the theme in counterpoint. A worth-buying set, also for the rhythm section with Bill Evans, the always flawless Paul Chambers and a great Art Taylor behind the drums.
Guardando la copertina di questo album spicca immediatamente la presenza di due tromboni. Potrà sembrare strano per tutti quegli ascoltatori che hanno sempre considerato il trombone come uno strumento goffo, ben distante dall'idea di sentirlo a guida di una sessione, quest'album è dedicato a questo genere di distratti ascoltatori. Già dalla prima traccia si può sentire come il trombone possa suonare leggero e allegro nel tema di "This could be the start of something big" grazie alla sua timbrica rotonda ma ritmicamente staccata ed accattivante. Altri momenti interessanti li possiamo sentire nella classicissima "Blue Monk" di Thelonious Monk: dopo l'introduzione di piano entrambi i fiati attaccano il famosissimo tema cromatico in armonia per poi passare ad un interessante contrappunto nel secondo chorus. Un disco che merita molta attenzione, anche per la sezione ritmica con Bill Evans, il sempre impeccabile Paul Chambers e uno strepitoso Art Taylor dietro alla batteria.
