Mingus Ah Um

Mingus was not a banal man and, due to his originality, his recordings are very far from obvious...also in their titles. This very funny album is the first recording of the genius of Nogales (AZ) with Columbia Record (seven years after his discographycal debut) and it has extraordinary arrangemets and dissonances tipical of the Blues language that caracterized Mingus' style for his whole career. Remarkable and very famous are ballads Goodbye Pork Pie Hat, dedicated to Lester Young who died a couple of weeks before the recordings, and Self Portrait in Three Colors. This album has also very brilliant and groovy tunes like Jelly Roll (with a double-bass introduction played in slap style), the quite gospel Better Git It In Yo' Soul or the mock-ironical Fables of Faubus. A very pleasant record also for not-so-into-jazz people, indispensable for great Charlie's fan.

Mingus non era certo banale e, per questo, i suoi dischi sono tutt'altro che scontati...già a partire dal titolo. Questo divertentissimo album è il primo contratto del genio di Nogales (Arizona) con la Columbia Records, sette anni dopo il suo esordio discografico e ci regala già arrangiamenti geniali e dissonanze tipiche del linguaggio blues che caratterizzeranno lo stile di Mingus per tutta la sua carriera. Notevoli e famosissime sono le ballad Goodbye Pork Pie Hat, dedicata a Lester Young comparso poche settimane prima, e Self Portrait in Three Colors, molto morbide nei suoni dei tre sax. Nell'album spiccano anche brani frizzanti e briosi come Jelly Roll (con un ottimo intro di contrabbasso in slap), la quasi gospel Better Git It In Yo' Soul o la caricaturale Fables of Faubus. Un album piacevole anche per i non esperti di jazz, indispensabile per i fan del grande Charlie.
