Getz meets Mulligan in Hi-Fi

A disc headed to nocturnal atmospheres, yet in the title, with the aid of great arrangements and sidemen and soloists famous for their round tone. A strange line-up, with Jim Hall's guitar working with a rhythm section of bass and drums (always played with brushes) to back three horns: Trumpet (or flugelhorn), Valve Trombone and Baritone Sax. Highlights of the session include a Mulligan arranged version of a Chopin's prelude and both version of the title track even if the leader plays piano in the first one and clarinet (backed by a string section) in the latter one. A velvet set with an eye on the lyrical approach of all the band.

Un disco che pone l'accento sulle atmosfere notturne, già evocate nel titolo, tramite un magistrale utilizzo di arrangiamenti e musicisti rinomati per il loro suono vellutato. Una formazione molto particolare, con la chitarra di Jim Hall nella sezione ritmica di contrabbasso e batteria (sempre suonata con le spazzole) di supporto a ben tre fiati: Tromba (o flicorno), Trombone a pistoni e Sax Baritono. Nel disco figura anche un ottimo arrangiamento di un preludio di Chopin, ottimamente arrangiato dal leader; mentre nelle due versioni della title track il grande Jeru non tocca il suo baritono mostrandosi al pianoforte nella prima versione e al clarinetto (accompagnato da una sezione di archi) nella seconda. Un disco molto vellutato che dipinge appieno le doti liriche di tutti i musicisti.
