[About Monody]
Thanks for downloading Monody Palm.

Monody is a text editor-like sequencer for playing music.
Composing songs on Monody is very easy: just write notes by jotting down alphabets and numbers.
As it is 'text editor-like', you can 'copy' / 'cut' and 'paste', even 'undo', as you like.

You need Palm OS 3.0 or higher.

[Install]
Hot-synch 'monody.prc', plus all *.pdb files.
*.pdb files are all sample data.
You can easily erase them later, so, don't hesitate!!

First, let's check those samples.
Tap 'Open', and you'll get the list of the songs.
Choose one of them, and tap 'Open' button to load.
(F.Y.I., you can delete data here, by tapping 'Delete' button.)
Now, just tap 'Play', and enjoy!
Check other data, as well.

By pressing 'Rpt 1' button, you get 'R 10'.
And press it again to get 'R500'.
They are the number of times to repeat playing.
Usually, you won't need to use this function, I suppose.
'R500' is for the data 'Metronome'.

To stop in the middle of a song, just tap anywhere on the screen.

[How to compose]
'Tp=' means 'tempo'.
Write down the number of quarter notes per minute.
Default is 120, and it can be any number between 1 and 999.

Imagine this is the keyboard of a piano!
And this is how to write notes (pitch).
As you can see, the numbers represent 'octave'.
For black keys, use capital letters.
'P0' represents rest.
For some reason I cannot figure out why, 'c0' doesn't work on my WorkPad.

For the time value (duration), add a number between 1 and 999 to the pitch, i.e. 'c496', 'G4288' etc.
A quarter note equals 96.
So, an eighth note is 48.

whole note = 96*4 = 384
half note = 96*2 = 192
quarter note = 96
eighth note = 96/2 = 48
sixteenth note = 96/4 = 24

dotted half = half + quarter = 192+96 = 288
dotted quarter = quarter + eighth = 96 +48 = 144
dotted eighth = eighth + sixteenth = 48 +24 = 72

Make sense?
For triplets or tercets or, whatever you may call it, I'm sure you can calculate!!

If you want to, you can write some comment in a line beginning with '/'.
If the first letter of a line doen't begin with '/' or alpahbets 'c' - 'b', Monody gives you warning.
Be especially careful with blank spaces after the last line.

For visibility, I recommend you to give one or more blank spaces between notes.
For the same reason, divide any long line into two or more, and give blank lines as necessary.

As Monody is 'text editor-like', you can 'copy' / 'cut' and 'paste' as you like.
In the above exapmle, you don't have to write everything:
You can copy the first line to the second and the fourth line.
Then, for the second line just change 'g e e' to 'f d d'.
For the fourth line, simply change two e's to two g's.
Even for the third line, you could copy the first two notes of any line and paste them twice to get four notes, and then, just 'fine-tune' each.
Easy, isn't it?

To save data, tap 'Save' button.
Press 'New' to start from the scratch.

[Specs]
You cannot change tempo in the middle of a song.
Only one tone: good ol' 'Beep'.
Velocity (volume) is fixed.
The maximum size of one data is around 600 notes (including rests):
At least, that's what I meant...

[Known problems]
1. When you 'Save' data, Monody doen't ask you if it's OK to overwrite. So, be careful!

2. Don't finish Monody when you are at the 'List' screen. You'll have to 'software reset'!

[Notes]
Monody Palm 0.83 is a 'free software'.
I cannot take any responsibility for any loss or damage Monody Palm might cause.

I used prc-tools 2.0 + sdk 3.1 for Monody Palm 0.83.
For drawing the icon, I used Paint Shop Pro.

Special thanks goes to Mr. K. Ohtake for letting me use freeware 'LHA Utility 32' for archiving, and Mr. Takanori Hoshi for useful advice on coding.
