YTV (Youth Television) is the brainchild of the late Dr. Geoffrey R. Conway. The station was founded in 1988 and now reaches 7,000,000 households in Canada alone through Shaw Communications/Rogers Entertainment. The channel is now owned by CORUS Entertainment.
Targeted at a primary audience aged 9 to 14 years of age, YTV provides 40 hours per week of non-commercial programming, primarily in the morning hours.
YTV is, essentially, the Canadian equivalent of the US Nickelodeon which also provides programming for the younger set.
YTV is probably most noted for being among the first stations to pull the somewhat violent Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers when children were trying the dangerous martial arts moves on other children.
The channel has spawned many other like-programmed
stations as we approach the age of the 500 channel universe. Other
channels include Treehouse, Teletoon and "sub programming" called YTV Jr.
