The Stradivarius 42 series "The Bach Sound" is the gold standard in American orchestras today, and was popularised by the 42 series. A key component in producing this characteristic big, dark sound is thought to be the large "square" or "bass" end-crook on the slide - as opposed to the "round" crooks found on Conn 88Hs (the other American classic). This bass crook allows a more open low register, but many trombonists also find it requires more work to play overall. Many people (myself included) find the conventional rotary valve on the 42B and 42C to be stuffy compared to that on the Conn 88H - the reason for this, apparently, is that the Bach rotor ports are comparatively small in bore. For this reason, some repair shops (eg Osmun in the USA) offer a port-enlarging service.

The 8H/88H series A classic series favoured by many trombonists, including luminaries past and present such as Emory Remington, Denis Wick and Christian Lindberg. 8Hs were first produced in the early 20th century, and whilst the Bb/F version, the 88H, was introduced in 1954 and both have been in continuous production ever since. UMI have made available a wide variety of options with Generation 2 (Gen2) instruments, including five different bells, adjustable mechanical triggers, a number of interchangeable leadpipes, four slide options (.547 and .562 straight bore, .525/.547 or .547/.562 dual bore) and a choice of regular or CL2000 valve.   Holton Bass Trombones Many years ago, Holton bass trombones were once regarded as amongst the very finest instruments you could buy and so were highly sought after. They were played by luminaries such as Edward Kleinhammer (designed the legendary TR169) and Dave Taylor (played a TR169). With the advent of cheap but highly regarded instruments from manufacturers like Getzen and high-quality top-end offerings from Edwards and other custom manufacturers, Holtons have fallen dramatically in popularity. That said, it seems the current Holton bass flagship (the TR181) apparently still sells well, although Holton enthusiasts consider it inferior to the TR169. The most common complaint about Holton bass bones is that their rotary valve sections do not produce a sound as good as those of their competitors (due to undersized bore in the valve ports and attachment tubing, although the resulting additional resistance is said by some to aid the production of low notes).

Jupiter Jupiter once had a reputation for poor quality, and that opinion is still strongly held in many quarters. But Jupiter have been improving the quality of their lines over the years, so much so that their student euphoniums and tubas have become well-regarded. Their student trombones are still recommended only for those on a very tight budget(over the likes of Parrots, Larks, German-Engineering, etc), but consensus is that Yamahas and Getzens are the way to go if you can afford to spend a little more. Jupiter are certainly worth watching: they seem to be taking inspiration from Yamaha (they've even changed their trombone model designations to mimick the Yamaha system) so it is entirely conceivable that they will soon come to be similarly well-regarded for the quality of their instruments.

Kanstul Update 02/2004: It had seemed to me that Kanstul needed to rethink their niche and pricing strategy, as their (non-marching) student model trombones were on the pricey side compared to their competitors - on a budget, you'd had been better off with a Yamaha or Blessing. And if money was no object, you'd might as well have gotten a Conn or Bach, or even an Edwards, Rath or Shires.

But Zig Kanstul has recently (circa 2003) introduced a number of new instrument lines featuring valves of his own design ("Controlled Resistance [CR] Valves"). These instruments (namely the Symphony 1600 bass trombone series and the CR-variants of the Signature 1500 series) and valves are currently receiving rave reviews, and apparently compare well with the likes of Shires, Edwards, Rath, etc. And it seems that further instruments based (and improved) on other classic designs are in the works...

Kühnl & Hoyer The well-known Bavarian-based German company Kühnl & Hoyer was established in the mid-20th century by Adolf Kühnl, Josef Kühnl and Emil Hoyer. K&H launched a range of trombones designed in conjunction with Branimir Slokar in 1995, followed by another range developed in conjunction with Bart van Lier in 1996. In 2001, the Bolero F/L was awarded the German Music Instrument Prize.

All K&H trombones are fitted with chrome-plated nickel-silver inner slides and come with a two year guarantee. The K&H and Slokar series have the following as options: fixed or interchangeable leadpipes, regular-weight or light-weight nickel-silver outer slides. FE Olds The "real" FE Olds shut up shop in 1979 or thereabouts. Vintage models like the Recording and Super manufactured in California during the heyday of the company remain highly-prized even today. The Olds name has since been bought and is being used by a New Jersey company. The current Olds models are not as highly thought of as their forebears, and at least some models appear to be stencil-lines provided by Blessing.

Willson The Swiss family-owned Zurich-based company Willson, better reknown for their euphoniums, also produce trombones in bore sizes ranging from .525 to .562. Instruments with F attachments utilise "Rotax" full-flow valves (a proprietary valve technology belonging to Willson, which seems to me to consist essentially of conventional rotary valves with enlarged ports. That reminds me - those of you Bach 42B aficionados out there who feel your F valve to be a bit stuffy can get the ports enlarged by Osmun Brass), with wraps available both open and closed. Other distinctive options or features include inner slide tubes with a "Cera Titan" (titanium, rather than chrome) finish and an innovative press-and-release, press-and-lock slide lock. It seems that titanium mouthpieces, bells and finishes are also available on special order - I want to verify this but can't remember from who or where I heard this (please get in touch if you read this).

Customisation of instruments is possible. The availability of modular large bore and bass instruments allows customers to choose from the following bell options: material (gold brass, yellow brass or nickel-silver), hardness (hard or soft), weight (standard, light or heavy), diameter (8.5, 9.75 or 10.5 inches). Other options include leadpipes (choice of 3) and bore sizes(.525, .525/.547, .547, .547/.562, .562).

DEG distribute Willson instruments in the USA, and appear to have given the instruments their own (DEG) model numbers.

Tenor Trombone (Model?) .525 8   If purchasing in the US, DEG designation is 2300L.
Tenor Trombone (Model?) .525 8 F DEG designation is 2311. With Rotax valve.
Tenor Trombone (Model?) .547 8.5   DEG designation is 2400L.
Tenor Trombone (Model?) .547 8.5 F DEG designation is 2411. With Rotax valve.
Bass Trombone (Model?) .562 9.75 F Bass, DEG designation is 2511. With Rotax valve.
551TA .562 9.75 F/Gb Bass, DEG designation is 2551. Independent Rotax valves, optional G slide instead of Gb.

Yamaha Advantage AD-SL1 .500 8   Two-piece yellow brass bell, nickel-silver slide, detachable balance, student model.
The 300 series Yamaha's student line. Good value for money. The YSL-354 is considered by many to be the premier student instrument, yet can be had cheaper than virtually all the other student models from reputable manufacturers (aside from Jupiter).
YSL-350C .500 8 C C valve for short arms, gold brass bell, student model. Adjustable finger ring and thumb button. Introduced 2001.
  YSL-354 .500 8   Two-piece yellow brass bell, silver-plate option available (YSL-354S), student model. Introduced 1976, replaces YSL-352.
  YSL-354V .500 8   Two-piece yellow brass bell, student model. Introduced 1988.
  YSL-356G .500/.525 8 F Two-piece gold brass bell, closed wrap, student model.
The 400 series Yamaha's intermediate line. Excellent value for money. The "intermediate" designation is misleading - many of the current 400 series were formerly 600 series professional models that have been rebranded following the introduction of newer 600-series models. Some stores will give you really good discounts on these if you bargain hard enough(the margins are larger than on the 300 series), so that you can in effect purchase a professional-quality instrument for only slightly more than a student model (in the UK, a mere GBP 150-200 more).
YBL-421G .563 9.5 F Bass, gold brass bell, closed wrap, student model. Introduced 1995 (rebadged YBL-621), replaces YBL-321 and YBL-322.

YSL-446G .525 8.5 F Gold brass bell, closed wrap, nickel-silver slide (yellow brass in USA), intermediate model. Introduced 1999 (rebadged (YSL-646), replaces YSL-356 series.
YSL-447G .547 8.5   Gold brass bell, nickel-silver slide (yellow brass in USA), intermediate model. Re-badged YSL-647.

YSL-548GAL .547 8.5 F Gold brass bell, closed wrap, “advanced” intermediate model (better bell construction).
The 600 series Yamaha's professional range. Once consisting mainly of cheap clones of premier models from well-known Western manufacturers, Yamaha now has an enviable stable of self-developed instruments designed with input from world-reknown trombonists such as Douglas Yeo and Ian Bousfield.

YBL-612II .563 10 F/Eb Bass, one-piece gold brass bell, dependent valves, closed wrap, professional model. Considered by some to be easier to play but lighter in sound-quality than the Bach 50, and hence more suited to big bands than orchestra. For those seeking an orchestral instrument, the YSL-613 or YSL-622 are usually recommended instead.
YBL-612IIR .563 10 F/Eb Bass, one-piece red brass bell, dependent valves, closed wrap, professional model. Introduced 1995. Considered by some to be easier to play but lighter in sound-quality than the Bach 50, and hence more suited to big bands than orchestra. For those seeking an orchestral instrument, the YSL-613 or YSL-622 are usually recommended instead.

YBL-622 .563 9.5 F/D Bass, one-piece gold brass bell, dependent valves (second valve detachable), closed wrap, professional model. This instrument was designed by Doug Yeo, bass trombonist with the Boston Symphony. Introduced 1993, replaces YBL-621. Valves are highly regarded, said by some to be almost as good as Greenhoes.

The Xeno series The Xeno series is Yamaha's top-of-the-line professional range. Xeno trumpets have been widely available for years, but the long-awaited and highly-hyped trombone models have only recently been released internationally (they had previously only been available in Japan, apparently because Yamaha were testing and tweaking them there). The model numbers are interesting in a number of ways. Firstly, rather than continuing with the "traditional" 600-series numbers for its professional range, Yamaha has chosen to revive a series number previously used for a long-defunct so-called "custom" series. Secondly, to my knowledge, Yamaha have not previously used an "O" designation for its open-wrap horns. Thirdly, there has been a great deal of interest recently amongst custom trombone builders in replicating the classic 88Hs of Conn's 1960's golden era - could it be that the 881/882 series is Yamaha's stab at reproducing or improving on those instruments? If so, than the choice of serial number may well have been made to evoke the mystique of the 88H heritage (the open wrap models of which, coincidentally enough, are designated 88H"O").
