Summary

Tum has been a monk eversince his mother and father died when he was young. He has an older sister named Jun or Jane who lives in the Baytong province. One day he receives a letter from her saying that she will visit him very soon. Unfortunately, the train she is riding is bombed and she dies. Her daughter Maria was out of the train at the moment so only suffered from a broken leg. Tum travels to Baytong to pay his respects to his sister. He meets for the first time his neice, and realizes that she has no one to take care of her because no one knows the whereabouts of her father.

Tum decides to leave the monk hood to take care of his neice. However, since Tum has never left the temple and lived life as a normal person, it's hard for him to adjust to his surroundings. He lives in the salon that his sister bought and meets the different cafe girls that his sister worked with. He is also introduced to Lin, who helps take care of Maria with him. Slowly, he begins to develop feelings for Lin because of her kindness towards him and Maria. Lin has a boyfriend named Farook who is a muslim. Tum starts to learn how it is to live life like a normal person and many of the new things he learns, he doesn't understand. One of the cafe girls named Fern takes a liking to Tum and says he is her boyfriend.

Lin and Tum find Maria's dad so that he can sign the papers that let Tum take Maria as his daughter. Lin also finds out that Farook is a suspect in the train bombing that killed Tum's sister. She and Tum go out to meet him and he denies that he was involved in the bombing. Lin is disappointed because he won't tell her anything. Tum develops feelings of jealousy towards Farook and starts to drink heavily. He also learns that Maria's father wants to take care of her and to take back what he said earlier. That night, he also sleeps with Fern; and when he wakes up he feels horrible.

In the end, Maria goes to live with her father. Lin converted to Farook's religion because she loves him very much, and would sacrifice anything for love. Farook took Lin's advice and turned himself into the police. Tum learned that in life, in order to live it to the fullest you have to know how to make it work. Tum takes on a job as a tour guide, then a salesman, and finally a famous hair stylist.
