Hotaru was a very weak/sick little girl who was possesed by Tou Ceti entity. Professor Tomoe (hotaru's father) and a group of scientist were trying out an experiment when something went wrong and it blew up. Everyone was killed except for Professor Tomoe. While he held his dying daughter in his arms, the entity appeared and offered to save his daughter only if he agreed to work for them, by creating daimon eggs. When he agreed, Mistress Nine inhabited Hotaru's body. Later Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune thought that they had to kill Hotaru as part of their mission. Mistress Nine then took over Hotaru's body and tricked Sailor Moon into giving her the Holy Grail. She than brought Master Pahraoh Ninety into this dimension. Later on Hotaru was able to become Sailor Saturn and than she killed Mistress Nine and fought Paraoh Ninety with Sailor Moon's help.

Hotaru has this special power that is able to heal wounds. Because of this special power she has, her classmates think that it is weird and very gross. So they don't want to have anything to do with her. She later runs into Chibi-Usa (Reni) by accident and they become best friends. When Reni finds out that Hotaru had the special power to heal wounds, she thinks that it is very cool which suprises Hotaru.
