3-D Neolithic Dwelling in Catalhoyuk, Turkey
(based on the " Excavation of the North Area 1998" Archaelogical report by Craig Cessford) Brief: The Neolithic site of Catalhoyuk was first discovered in the late 1950s and excavated by James Mellaart between 1961 and 1965. The site rapidly became famous internationally due to the large size and dense occupation of the settlement, as well as the spectacular wall paintings and other art that was uncovered inside the houses. Since 1993 an international team of archaeologists, lead by Ian Hodder, has been carrying out new excavations and research, in order to shed more light on the people that inhabited the site. The primary excavation work of the 1998 season was on North Area to remove the remaining walls of Building 1, which was studied in the 1997 season, and the surrounding and underlying infilling deposits to reveal the structure, named Building 5, beneath Building 1. Based on the archaeological findings of the 1998 excavation, Craig Cessford published " The Excavation of North Area 1998" report, which mainly describes Building 1 and Building 5. A large portion of this report was dedicated to the quality, function, and the construction sequence of their spaces. The purpose of this independent study, however, is not on the side of archeological research. It is a study to exam the process of transforming the outcome of the space-related archaeology study into a vivid animation presentation which general public can easily appreciate. Consider the enormous among of archeology sites which general public doesn't have the access, this study brings up huge potential to promote public's interest and understanding of our distant past through the presentation of "virtual archaeology site" in World Wide Web. |
