What is the Accounting Honor Society?

It is an organization run by and for Accounting students. It concentrates on the students' needs and development as a professional person. It helps the student get the much-needed edge in starting a rewarding career. The Accounting Honor Society conducts meetings featuring CPAs from various firms with a variety of backgrounds in accounting. Among them are the representatives from public, private and governmental accounting. AHS also organizes social events and affords students the opportunity to prepare basic tax returns. It meets the academic needs of students by offering tutoring.

Why should I join?

Some of the benefits of this prestigious membership include the great networking possibilities available to our society members along with learning about interview techniques and the vast career paths that are available to Accounting majors. It also recognizes the achievements of outstanding students. Moreover, members get the discounts for the tickets to the annual Dinner Dance, which is one of the most important events of the AHS.

What are my responsibilities?

To be a member, you must have an overall or an Accounting GPA of 3.5 or better. In addition as a member you must do at least one of the following activities listed below. However, the society simply asks you to be an active member and to try to attend as many meetings as you can. These meetings are held only for your benefit.

Accounting Honor Society Features:

Tutoring
One of the primary functions of the Accounting Honor Society is to provide tutors to the students in need of additional help in their Accounting courses. Any student with a 3.3 GPA or better in Accounting and an hour or more per week can become a tutor. If interested, please leave your name and phone number in the Accounting Honor Society's mailbox in the Accounting Department. Better yet, e-mail your contact information to our tutoring coordinator at Accountingtutoring@yahoo.com Needless to say this is a great opportunity to build your resume and strengthen your interpersonal skills.

Going Concerns Journal

This is an annual publication of the Accounting Honor Society. The articles focus on any topic related to the field of Accounting. This includes: changes in financial accounting and reporting, new tax law, technical innovations and its influence on the profession, criteria for becoming a CPA, and recent trends in the profession. Students also write about their experiences on internships and in the job market. This is an excellent opportunity to build your resume.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

The Accounting Honor Society in association with the Internal Revenue Service sponsors the VITA program. The purpose of this program is to provide free help in the preparation of the basic federal, state, and local tax returns. For more information click here.
