Gunning Down Romance

An Animorphs Songfic

Slowly, the hawk named Tobias circled around Jake's house. He had seen Marco go in there yesterday, with a sleeping bag and backpack. Obviously he was staying overnight.

Tobias couldn't wait for Marco to leave. He had to get in and see Jake. Although he was a hawk, he still had the mind of a boy, and his love for Jake stood unwavering throughout. It was Jake's calm strength that had helped him to deal with the nothlit incident.

The door opened and Marco walked to the door, looking at something behind him. His hand stayed out of sight inside.

Tobias swooped down to the big oak tree in Jake's front yard. He climbed to the second lowest branch, his natural color blending in with the tree. Marco stepped outside the door . . . with Jake's hand in his hand. Not pulling Jake, leading him.

They got outside the door, and Jake turned around and closed it behind them. Marco practically leaped into Jake's arms, kissing him, eyes closed.

As they separated, Tobias's acute hawk senses heard Marco whisper.

"Thanks, Jake. I love you."

"I know."

Marco walked away from the house, looking back and smiling at Jake. Jake looked and smiled fondly at the leaving figure. He turned around and started to walk back inside.

All the frustration and emotion of seeing Jake with somebody else, finally took it's toll on Tobias.

"TSSSSSSSEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRR."

The piercing cry echoed across the space between them. Jake turned his head toward the sound in time to see a red-tailed hawk fly away.

"No. Tobias, WAIT!"

Love and other moments are just chemical reactions in your brain
In your brain
And feelings of aggression are the absence of the love-drug in your veins
In your veins

Love's only a state of mind. It's not real. It's just neurons telling you that you're in love. It's not real, Tobias thought as he flew away, riding the thermals.

Love come quickly, 'cause I feel my self-esteem is caving in
It's on the brink
Love come quickly, 'cause I don't think I can keep this monster in
It's in my skin

Tobias felt his whole self-image, all based on the solidness of Jake's love, come crumbling down. Of course, how could he ever love a loser like me? What did I do to deserve him?

Love and other socially acceptable emotions are morphine
They're morphine
Cleverly concealing primal urges often felt but rarely seen
Rarely seen

Now I don't have reason to act like a person. My last real tie with the human world is severed. Jake helped me to accept the hawk, but keep the human first. Lies. More lies. He was using me. Hawks don't fight alongside the Animorphs. Tobias swooped toward the rabbit on the ground. He had been fighting the hawk desire to eat that rabbit ever since he assumed this body.

Love, I beg you, lift me up into that privileged point of view
The world of two
Love don't leave me, 'cause I console myself that Hallmark cards are true
I really do

Tobias sat on his perch, eating the rabbit. I wish that it was real. I wish that it had never happened. Marco. I hate him. It's all his fault. He must have seduced Jake. Jake never would have done it of his own will.

I'm gunning down romance. It never did a thing for me.
But heartache and misery, aint' nothing but a tragedy.
I'm gunning down romance. It never did a thing for me.
But heartache and misery, aint' nothing but a tragedy.
Love don't leave me.

I admit that Marco's cute, but Jake doesn't judge on appearances. Could he have worked his way into Jake's heart honorably? No! This sucks. This whole deal just sucks. Love and romance and happiness, they can all just go to hell.

I'm gonna take these broken wings.
I'm gonna take these broken wings.
And learn to fly
And learn to fly away
(I'm gunning down romance)
And learn to fly away
And learn to fly away

And yet I still want to go back to him, even after this. Maybe if we talk it over, then we could get back together. Maybe I could talk to Marco. Maybe he'll understand that me and Jake . . .

Oh well, you never know until you try.

I'm gonna take these broken wings
And learn to fly again.

Wow. That's it. I never knew that writing a songfic would take so much thinking. Oh well. At least I know what to do now. There are a couple other Savage Garden songs that I could really work with.

Do you have any suggestions? Feedback is appreciated, as always.

The song was 'Gunning Down Romance' by Savage Garden.
