Spring-Cleaning Day

Author's note: This was my first English essay assignment of Form 4. We had to write a short story containing the elements: a boy, a girl and a broom.

It was Spring-cleaning Day and oh, what a lovely day it was – just right for spring-cleaning. The sun was shining and the sky a perfect blue, dotted with cotton-puff clouds.

On that Spring-cleaning Day, the Girl – like all other people – was spring-cleaning. She sand merrily as she swept the floor of her home with her favourite yellow broom.

The Boy passed the cosy little cottage that day, whistling a gay tune as he strolled along. The melodious sound of singing reached his ears and caught his attention. Being a bit nosy, the Boy went to the window and looked in. The sigh of the Girl sweeping and singing captivated the Boy.

“Those lovely eyes! That silky hair! The way she handles that broom… Enchanting!” sighed the Boy. “I must marry her!” he exclaimed, forgetting that he was only sixteen.

He entered the cottage, startling the Girl and immediately said to her, “Marry me, O beautiful one! Come away with me and you shall never have to sweep any floor again!”

“No, never!” declared the Girl, dramatically. “I would never abandon my precious broom!” cried she, and promptly shooed the Boy out with her yellow broom. Then she shut the door and continued sweeping and singing as before.
