Report on Inaugural UK Regional Reunion by Dave Lichtenstein
Shrivenham 24 June 2001
I was privileged to attend a reunion lunch of 32 ex Hill School pupils, 5 members of the staff and 16 spouses on the 24 June at the Shrivenham Village Hall on a fine sunny Summery Sunday. It appeared that everyone enjoyed themselves thoroughly and I trust that the photographs below convey some of the enjoyable atmosphere of the day.
Amazing Grace
Ladies and Gentleman: I have been asked to say grace before lunch and I am happy to do so. But, to an ex-teacher in his 92nd year, what a rare opportunity it is to have a captive audience, perhaps for the last time. So, with your permission, I propose to digress, just a little: I won't keep you long.
Thank you all for coming. Some have travelled more than 100 miles, leaving aside for the moment one person who has travelled several thousand miles.
It is a pleasure for me to be with you today - a great pleasure, in fact a very great pleasure; but these superlatives fall short - I feel an uplift - somehow an out-of-this-world elation at the presence of some members of staff - some pupils before my time - some I already know - and others after my retirement. Thank you all for coming.
In connection with today some people must be especially mentioned: Dave: what can I say? I must leave that to someone later on. Also there is Iain Morrison - our Finance Minister. Roger Steeden our Printer and Nan Pratt in charge of Domestic Affairs.
Finally - if by chance you have relatives or friends who knew me, please give them my remembrances and best wishes.
And so to my grace, which has been a long time coming. After the amalgamation, at the Hill School, there were 12 varieties of religion, so my words today have been very carefully chosen - I will say them for you:
"May we offer our thanks to the Giver of All Good Things, including the food which is about to follow - Amen."
Thank you again for coming, and enjoy your meal. Arthur Brindley, Headmaster 1953-1961
