In Greek mythology, a giant with a hundred eyes whom the goddess Hera made the guardian of the maiden Io. He was later slain by Hermes, sent by Zeus to save the maiden, who lulled him to sleep then killed him. After dying, Hera placed his many eyes onto the tail of the peacock, her favorite animal.

His epithet Panoptes means "all-seing."
