Giant of English folklore that was killed by Jack
the Giant-killer. Blunderbore had heard of Jack's
reputation of having slain many giants. Determined to
kill him, Blunderbore invited Jack to his house in an
apparently genial manner. He led Jack to his room and let
him sleep there. Then, in the middle of the night,
Blunderbore thwacked Jack's bed with his club, thinking
that Jack was there yet little knowing that Jack had
snuck away, suspecting that the giant would do such a
thing like that, and placed a bag of straw in his place
on the bed. The next morning, Blunderbore was surprised
to see Jack sitting at the table as if nothing had
happened the night before. He then offered Jack large
amounts of pudding, hoping that he would refuse, allowing
him to kill Jack for his rudeness. Jack apparently ate
all the pudding, though in reality he stuffed it in a
potato sack hidden underneath his shirt. Determined to
prove that he could outdo Jack, Blunderbore ate the same
large amount of pudding. Jack then grabbed a knife and
apparently cut open his stomach (which was actually just
the potato sack), letting all the pudding ooze out. Blunderbore
did the same, killing himself in the process. |
