Bunyip

Large, bellowing amphibious creature of Aboriginal legend, often appearing as a seal- or hippopotamus-like creature with a harsh cry. It lived at the bottom of lakes, streams, water holes, swamps, and rivers, requiring calm water to live in. It fed on humans, especially women and children, if food was scarce, and was thought to bring disease. It was said to be a form of punishment from the Dreamtime.
