Iron-clad and rather sluggish bull-like creature found in Africa. It was described with a large head that it would carry with greatest difficulty because of its enormous mane; hence it is always looking downward. If it were not for this, life would be destroyed as a glance into its eyes or a touch of its breath brings immediate death. It was thus poisonous because of its diet, which consisted of poisonous herbs. During the Middle Ages, the Catoblepas was often identified with the Gorgons. |
