The legendary ancestor of the Greeks and founder and first king of Attica, he was born from the soil and was half-man and half-snake. He taught humans how to bury their dead, get married, and how to read and write. When Athena and Poseidon contended for lordship of Attica, Cecrops chose Athena, naming the city of Athens after her. The acroppolis, or citadel, of the city was named Cecropia after Cecrops. |
