Bird
of Greek and Egyptian mythology. It lived in Arabia near
a cool well, where it bathed itself everyday at dawn and
would sing a song so beautiful that the sun would stop to
hear it sing. It lived for 500 years (or in some accounts
1461 years), and when it felt its death approaching, it
would build itself a nest made of aromatic would, set it
ablaze, then consumed itself in fire. It would later be
renewed through its ashes. Its plumage was golden yellow
or red, and it is associated with the peacock or the
eagle. It symbolized immortality and life after death,
and was associated with the sun and various sun-gods,
including Apollo of the ancient Greeks and Ra of the
ancient Egyptians. Only one phoenix exists at a time. |
