Vegetables:
To have vegetables retain their color, add a lump of sugar, or vinegar, or a tad of lemon juice.

Perk up soggy lettuce by soaking in cold water with some lemon juice. To store place in a zip lock bag with paper towel to absorb moisture.

To improve the crispness of French fried potatoes, soak the raw potatoes in cold water for about 30 minutes before cooking.

When you purchase a bag of potatoes put an apple in the bag so the potatoes will last without sprouting and wrinkling for about 8 weeks.

Onions have you crying?? When cutting onions dampen the cutting board with white vinegar to stop the tears.

Did you know if you have a stainless steel sink you can rub your fingers on it after peeling onions to get rid of the odor on your hands? A stainless steel spoon will also work

Fruit

Strawberries seem to spoil very quickly. Wash and place them in a colander. Pour BOILING water over the strawberries. This will kill the bacteria that molds the berries. Place the strawberries in a plastic container in the refrigerator. They will last twice as long.

To get more juice from lemons first soak them in hot water for a few seconds. Then roll them before squeezing.

To ripen fruit quickly (such as pears which take a long time to ripen) place the unripe fruit in a paper lunch sack along with a banana. Fold sack closed and check next day or two & fruit will be ripe & ready to eat! Works great.

Remove fruit stains from your hands by rubbing them with vinegar.

Desserts

An easy way to make whipped cream. Use heavy whipping cream, dash of vanilla extract, and couple of teaspoons of sugar and whip to desired thickness.

To keep cookies fresh, place a slice of apple in the container where they are stored.

Use powdered sugar instead of flour when rolling out cookies, they will be crisper and tastier.

Stick a piece of bread in with brown sugar to keep it from getting hard.

To make self rising flour, mix 4 cups of flour, 2 teaspoons of salt, and 2 tablespoons of baking powder. Store in a tightly covered container.

To keep bugs out of flour type products; flour, cornmeal, etc.. add a bay leaf to each canister. Works like magic.
